Gaels cruise past Rockets

When you compete in the North Central Conference, it can be tough to have many fun nights on the basketball court.

The St. Edmond boys, though, were able to do just that Friday night, closing out their regular season with an 88-54 victory over Paton-Churdan in non-league action.

Four seniors led the Gaels (10-10 overall), as Jackson Kochendorfer scored 30, Andrew Gibb added 21, Mitchell Rasmussen dished out 10 assists and Sean Newell scored 10 points with five rebounds.

“I think the kids really enjoyed themselves out there and that was great to see,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “We talked before about this being the final time on this court for these seniors. Maybe they didn’t realize it, but this was a special way for them to go out.

“I’ve known this group for a long time. I coached Jackson, Sean and Mitchell back in third grade. They have really meant a lot to me and the program.”

Kochendorfer hit eight of St. Edmond’s 12 three-pointers on the night, with junior Connor Bocken adding four triples and 14 points. The Rockets (4-17) kept it close early on before a barrage of deep shots by Kochendorfer buried them.

After Gibb scored 12 in the first quarter, Kochendorfer accounted for 14, giving the Gaels a commanding 48-28 halftime lead.

“We really moved the ball well,” Kochendorfer said. “The kids were patient, looked for the open shooter and we hit some shots.”

As a team, St. Edmond recorded 22 assists on 34 made field goals. Gibb also had five rebounds, with Jed Tracy chipping in four points, three steals, two rebounds and a block off the bench.

Earlier this week, Gibb became the school’s career points leader. He now has 1,460 points as a Gael.

For Paton-Churdan, Kaleb Fisher had 18 points, knocking down six 3-pointers, and Jesse Knowles added 13.

Next action for St. Edmond will be on Thursday when they take on North Iowa at Bishop Garrigan in a Class 1A, District 3 quarterfinal. Tip is set for 6:30 p.m.
