Close call

MARSHALLTOWN — The Fort Dodge boys were unable to make it two in a row here Friday night, falling short vs. Marshalltown inside the Roundhouse, 42-40.

After a slow offensive game for much of the night, the Dodgers battled back from a five-point deficit to make it a one possession game.

“We missed too many free throws and had too many turnovers, especially down the stretch, to close out a game on the road,” FDSH head coach Tom Daniel said. “We were down one with a minute to go, but we couldn’t keep from playing from behind.”

Jace Peterson scored 14 to lead the Dodgers (1-6 overall, 0-2 in CIML Iowa Conference), while Ty Kershaw had 12 and Jordan Jackson six.

Fort Dodge finished 9-for-18 from the free throw line, while Marshalltown went 15-for-22.

“You can’t miss that many free throws,” Daniel said. “That’s the difference in the game right there.

“I thought Dayson (Clayton) gave us good minutes and Kershaw played amazing.”

Jacob Smith paced the Bobcats (5-1, 1-0) with 11, as they have now won five in a row since a loss to Johnston in their season opener. That run includes three consecutive home victories over Fort Dodge, Southeast Polk and West Des Moines Dowling.
