Gaels come up short

HOLSTEIN — The St. Edmond football team learned a valuable lesson here Friday night.

After seeing several scoring chances come up empty, the Gaels could only watch as Jake Kliegl led Ridge View to its first win of the season, 26-0.

Kliegl, who SEHS head coach Matt Dillon pointed out as the “one kid we can’t let beat us,” ran for 167 yards and three touchdowns.

“This was a valuable life lesson for our guys,” Dillon said. “When you have the chance to put somebody away early and don’t do it, they will come back to bite you.

“We focused all week on not letting (Kliegl) beat us, and that’s exactly what he did.”

Kliegl, the state’s leading tackler entering the night, broke a scoreless tie with a 72-yard run to the end zone early in the third. He added a 7-yard run in the final minute that quarter and put the game out of reach with a 44-yard TD in the fourth.

The Raptors (1-6 overall, 1-2 in Class A, District 2) took advantage of four turnovers by St. Edmond (2-5, 0-3), who has now lost four in a row.

“Bottom line, we are still in year one of building this program, and we are in it for the long haul,” Dillon said. “It’s disappointing and frustrating because there were so many times we could have called something different or done something different, and maybe the end result is different.

“But as I tell my players, if ifs and butts were candy and nuts, it’d be Christmas every day.”

Sean Flattery ran for 61 yards and Sean Newell added 58 for the Gaels, with Elijah Litwiller throwing for 58 yards. Newell had a career-high three receptions for 41 yards, and Drew Schaeffer made three catches for 17.

Schaeffer and Peyton Spangler each recorded fumbles, with Kase Baker picking off a pass. Newell and Nick Lawler each had a sack.

“We’ve just got to go back to the drawing board,” Dillon said. “We’ve got two games left to see what we can do.”

For the Raptors, Ezra Miller had a sack and was in on several tackles for loss. Miller, who is cousins with Fort Dodge Senior High head coach Matt Miller, has committed to the University of Iowa as one of the top offensive lineman in the state.

After back-to-back road games, St. Edmond returns to Dodger Stadium next Friday to face Alta/Aurelia. The Warriors (5-2, 2-1) fell to IKM-Manning last night, 20-19.

Ridge View heads to Manson Northwest Webster (0-7, 0-3), as the Cougars are coming off a 36-14 setback to Sioux Central last night.
