Third-ranked (Class 5A) West Des Moines Valley brought its aggressive attack to the Dodger gym and sombered the mood on Senior Night Tuesday with a three-set sweep of the Fort Dodge volleyball squad.

Scores were 25-10, 25-13 and 25-14 in favor of the Tigers.

Led by all-state University of Nebraska recruit Madi Kubik — a United States Women’s Junior National Team member — the Tigers (32-3 overall) were all business in leading the Dodgers for all but one point in the CIML Iowa Conference clash. Valley has now won 16 consecutive matches, dating back to Sept. 8, and has only dropped two total sets during that stretch.

“They’re as hard a hitting (opponent) as we’ve seen,” FDSH head coach Toni Cochrane said. “I thought we competed and scrambled to come up with some nice digs, but they were pretty overwhelming and relentless from Kubik on down.

“They’re the No. 3 team in the state for a reason. There were definitely some things we could have cleaned up to narrow the (margin of victory in each set), but it was incredibly difficult to keep them (contained).”

The Tigers led 15-4 right out of the gate in the opening set, and a Kubik kill capped the victory. It was more of the same in set two, with Valley building an insurmountable 13-2 advantage before FDSH fought back to within 18-10.

The Dodgers recorded the first point in the final set, and were down only 8-5 before the Tigers all but ended the match with eight of the next nine points. Fort Dodge did mount one last rally to make it 21-14 with five consecutive points, but another Kubik kill spearheaded the closing run.

Senior Molly Hartman had 15 digs for the Dodgers, with junior Ciarra Love adding 11. Sophomore Kiana Touney was 8-for-9 serving with an ace.

Senior Kacee Gollob finished with six kills, and senior Ebonee Altman contributed five.

Hartman, Gollob, Altman, Tehya Miller, Brooke Erickson, Kyanna Kirk and Brooklyn Rowden were honored with their parents before the match in Fort Dodge’s final home appearance of the year.

“Brooklyn really stepped up and played hard,” Cochrane said. “We needed her to be everywhere and take on a lot of different roles on the court (Tuesday). She did that.

“I want to thank our seniors. Given this was my (first year back), they helped with (the transition) and have competed, had fun and shown energy. I’ve really appreciated their efforts.”

The Dodgers head to Mason City on Tuesday to conclude the regular season.
