Huge district implications for area squads

Only two weeks into district play and marquee matchups are on tap for Week 6.

Five messenger-area teams Bishop Garrigan, Newell-Fonda, South Central Calhoun, Algona and Greene County will put their unbeaten records on the line.

The third-ranked Golden Bears (5-0, 1-0) will host unbeaten fourth-ranked Belmond-Klemme (5-0, 1-0).

No. 6 Newell-Fonda (5-0, 3-0) will entertain fourth-ranked Ar-We-Va (5-0, 3-0) in eight-man action.

The fourth-ranked Titans (5-0, 3-0), who have only given up three touchdowns in five games will travel to South Hamilton (4-1, 1-0).

Afer opening district play with a victory, Southeast Valley (3-2, 1-0) will get its shot at making a statement, as they host No. 2 Spirit Lake (5-0, 1-0).

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (2-3, 0-1) will host the only area contest of the week, as the Cowboys meet up with fourth-ranked Algona (5-0, 1-0).

Fifth-ranked Greene County (5-0, 1-0) will travel to Carroll Kuemper (2-3, 1-0) to try to keep their perfect record intact.

No. 4 Belmond-Klemme (5-0, 1-0) at No. 3 Bishop Garrigan (5-0, 1-0)

The Broncos have had two tough games so far, just getting past West Fork (21-14) last week in their district opener and needing double-overtime to upend Southeast Valley (43-36).

The senior trio of Tucker Kroeze, Gustavo Suarez and Easton Barrus have run wild in the first five games, combining for 1,198 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Kroeze (456 yards), Suarez (435)and Barrus (307) have rushed for 10, six and seven touchdowns respectively.

Barrus has trhown for 332 yards and three scores. Senior Logan Heaberlin has nine catches for 225 and five touchdowns. The Broncos have scored 229 points and average 45.8 per contest.

The Golden Bears earned a 28-14 victory over West Hancock in its district opener.

Quarterback Brad Capesius was 5 of 8 passing for 65 yards and two touchdowns, one to John Meis (six yards) and one to T.J. Schnurr (seven yards). Capesius also run for an 18 yard score.

Preston Kohlhaas had 15 carries for 167 yards and a 49-yard touchdown.

Capesius has thrown for 332 yards on the season and six touchdowns. Schnurr has caught 10 balls for 179 and four touchdowns.

Kohlhaas is the leading rusher with 378 yards and five scores, while Capesius has 319 on the ground and five touchdowns.

No. 4 Ar-We-Va (5-0, 3-0) at No. 6 Newell-Fonda (5-0, 3-0)

After a tough district contest two weeks ago against Kingsley-Pierson (27-26), the unbeaten Mustangs rolled to a 52-8 win over River Valley last week.

Things pick up as the Mustangs will host unbeaten Ar-We-Va. The Rockets are averaging 47 points per game and over 187 yards through the air.

Senior quarterback Keegan Simons is 52-for-90 passing ofr 860 yards and 13 touchdowns to only two interceptions.

Drew Schurke is the leading rusher with 332 yards on the ground and four scores. Simons has rushed for 237 and seven touchdowns.

The Rocket defense has 12 interceptions and leads the state with five touchdowns on interceptions.

Newell-Fonda is led by junior quarterback Bryce Coppock. He has rushed for 763 yards and 13 touchdowns and has thrown for 523 yards and eight scores. Damon Bartek and Hunter Christiansen have caught three scoring plays each.

Last week Coppock ran for 147 yards and three scores, including a 55-yard romp. Coppock threw for 78 yards and a touchdown. Tanner Gerke had 92 yards and two scores on the ground.

No. 4 South Central Calhoun (5-0, 1-0) at South Hamilton (4-1, 1-0)

The Titans have cruised through the first five games, allowing only 18 points and three touchdowns to go along with three shutouts. They are out scoring their opponents by an average of 40.2 points.

South Central Calhoun is the third leading scoring team in Class 1A. The two teams ahead of them are returning state champions.

The Titan defense has scored five touchdowns and has a special team score as well. South Central Calhoun has 15 take aways.

Quarterback Josh Henkenius has thrown for 399 yards and three scores, while Cole Corey has 243 yards and two touchdowns.

Jared Birks (180 yards), Meyer (175) and Chase McAlister (167) are the leading receivers with five combined touchdowns.

On the ground, Keagen Meyer has 395 yards and seven touchdowns, while Landon Schleisman has 252 and five scores.

Last week Meyer ran for two touchdowns, caught a touchdown pass and returned a kickoff for a score.

The Hawks have rushed for 1,069 yards and 14 touchdowns.

DJ Klonglan (374) and Sam Lewis (370) are the leading rushers with three and four touchdowns respectively.

Trevor Thompson and Cole Berg have rushed for four and three scores.

Berg has thrown for 231 yards and three scores.

No. 2 Spirit Lake (5-0, 1-0) at Southeast Valley (3-2, 1-0)

The Indians have scored 204 points on the season and are coming off a 42-0 shutout of Estherville-Lincoln Central.

Quarterback Connor Jensen is 50-for-77 passing for 921 yards and 12 touchdowns.

On the ground, Kolby Richter has rushed for 235 yards and two scores. Jensen has 218 for four and Gavin Harms has rushed for 198 and three.

Southeast Valley is coming off a 36-13 victory over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows in their district opener.

Kruse was 11-for-15 passing for 193 yards and three scores, while Kyler Fisher rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Fisher, Nyles Johnson and Chase Swieter all caught touchdowns.

Fisher has rushed for 624 yards and leads 2A with 11 rushing touchdowns. Kruse has 809 yards through the air on 55 of 86 passing and 10 touchdowns.

Johnson has caught 24 balls for 396 and four scores, while Swieter has 16 catches for 240 and five touchdowns.

No. 4 Algona (5-0, 1-0) at Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (2-3, 0-1)

Algona quarterback Matt Grein is seventh in Class 2A with 963 yards passing. He has thrown for 13 touchdowns and only one interception.

His favorite targets have been Wyatt Wegener (450 yards) and Skyler Groen (332). They have five and six touchdowns respectively.

On the ground Jacob Durant has rushed for 696 yards and eight scores, while Wegener (348) and Groen (321) have five and three touchdowns.

Last week Grein threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns.

Jacob Durant had 185 yards on the ground and three touchdowns, while Wegener ran for two.

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows’ ground game is paced by quarterback Jaace Weidemann, who has 868 yards and seven touchdowns. Weidemann has thrown for 211 yards and five scores.

In the loss agains the Eagles, Weidemann threw for a touchdown and rushed for one with 180 yards on the ground on 32 carries.

Other area games: Humboldt (1-4, 0-1) at Dallas Center-Grimes (1-4, 1-0); Perry (0-5, 0-1) at Webster City (2-3, 0-1); No. 5 Greene County (5-0, 1-0) at Carroll Kuemper (2-3, 1-0); Emmetsburg (1-4, 0-1) at Sibley-Ocheyedan (1-4, 0-1); Pocahontas Area (2-3, 1-0) at Ogden (3-2, 0-1); Cherokee (1-4, 0-1) at East Sac County (2-3, 0-1); Manson NW (0-5, 0-1) at IKM-Manning (3-2, 1-0); North Union (2-3, 1-0) at West Hancock (3-2, 0-1); Kingsley-Pierson (3-2, 1-2) at West Bend-Mallard (3-2, 2-1)
