Emery adds to resume

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — Mitchell Emery made another statement at the national swim meet on Friday.

The Iowa Central freshman added another bronze showing and fourth place finish at the NJCAA National Swimming and Diving Championships.

Emery, who was third in the 100 butterfly on Thursday, grabbed a third place showing in the 200 butterfly Friday.

The Fort Dodge graduate finished third in the prelims (1:54.91) and dropped time to finish in 1:53.21 in the finals. Ryan Pilkington (1:49.20) of Indian River was first and teammate Tucker Adams (1:51.37) was second.

Emery finished fourth in the 100 IM. He was fifth in the prelims (54.23) and again dropped time in the finals (53.85), and picked up a spot.

“Mitchell had a good day,” said Iowa Central head coach Joe Plane. “We usually just have them swim one individual event in a day, but he doubled up and swam great, giving us lots of points.”

The Tritons had five Top-5 finishes on the day.

Lasse Jorgenson turned in a fourth place showing in the 100 backstroke. In the finals he swam a 52.92 and was third in the prelims with a 53.22

“That was huge,” Plane said. “He has really swam well this weekend.”

On the women’s side Sandra Alonso Rivas earned bronze in the 100 IM. She swam a 1:00.93 in the finals and a 1:00.79 in the prelims.

“That is a good event for her,” Plane said. “She swam well against the Indian River girls.”

The 800 freestyle relay team of Jana Burner, Grace Nordquist, Kailie Valentine and Rivas were fourth in 8:17.09.

“We were seeded sixth and beat the two teams that were seeded ahead of us,” Plane said. “We were defintely happy with that swim.”

Lexi Quigley was eighth (1:14.10) in the 100 breaststroke, after a 1:13.88 for seventh in the prelims.

After finishing in eighth of the 500 freestyle prelims (5:36.15), Nordquist dropped three seconds (5:33.77) to place seventh.

Valentine was eighth (2:28.89) in the 200 butterfly after a seventh place showing in the prelims (2:27.61).

Ashley Wille (6:35.49) and Maria Havlik (6:45.00) were 21st and 23rd respectively in the 500 freestyle.

Indian River is leading the women’s title chase with 876 points. Iowa Lakes (280) is fifth and the Tritons are sixth with 278 points.

Karter Shimon grabbed a Top-10 for the men, placing eighth (4:59.09) in the 500 freestyle. He swam a 4:56.54 in the prelims. Joshua Sunberg was 18th (5:14.42).

The 800 freestyle relay team of Shimon, Ian Hilbrant, Alfonso Flores and Sunberg were eighth in 7:38.95.

Flores was 10th in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.81) after swimming a 1:02.71 in the prelims. Brennan DeCoursey (1:12.33) was 19th.

Hilbrant swam a 58.50 in the prelims of the 100 IM and a 58.44 in the finals to finish 12th.

Indian Rivers is leading the team race with 922 points and the Tritons are fifth with 253.
