Indians handle Gael girls, 61-53

After riding the wave created by Elle Ruffridge and company the last few years, Pocahontas Area girls head coach Robert Maske has a new-look team.

Thursday night, the Indians showed they are still going to be a tough out in the postseason, hitting 10 three-pointers in earning a 61-53 victory over St. Edmond here.

Jill Vonnahme, who signed to run at the University of Northern Iowa in the fall, made six of those triples and scored a game-high 19 points to lead Pocahontas Area (9-10 overall), who have won five in a row.

“Jill really carried us there in the first half,” Maske said. “I told the girls in the locker room after the game that they were 4-10 and just kept fighting to get better. Now, they are sitting at 9-10 and need to take every moment and opportunity to get better both individually and as a team.”

Vonnahme scored 15 of her 19 in the first half, including a buzzer-beating triple that gave the Indians a 37-30 lead. Delaney Ehn added 14 points and Elizabeth Ricke pulled down 10 rebounds.

Leading the way for the Gaels (4-15) was Livi Huss, as the senior scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Erin Flattery also had a double-double, scoring 12 points with 10 rebounds and five assists.

“The kids keep playing hard and getting better,” SEHS head coach Steve Neuberger said. “You can tell they are seeing the game better. We just had too many turnovers and let Vonnahme get hot.

“That three she hit at the end of the half really deflated us.”

St. Edmond was able to cut the deficit down to five late, but Ehn made five free throws in the fourth to help seal the deal. The Indians did finish the night just 9 of 22 from the charity stripe.

“We haven’t had a night quite like that yet (from the line),” Maske said. “This was a good win, but it was an important game because it allowed us to see what we need to work on defensively.

“We were a step slow and a step late on a lot of things and we need to get better there.”

Hannah Huss added nine points, four rebounds and four assists, with Macey Mason scoring six points and grabbing six boards.

Jocelyn Johnson and Leah Aljets each came off the bench to score eight points for the Indians.

St. Edmond returns to action Friday night, hosting fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Clear Lake in North Central Conference play. Pocahontas Area heads to West Bend-Mallard for its final Twin Lakes Conference game of the season.
