Final home game for Tritons

Last week, Iowa Central battled the current favorites to win the NJCAA national football championship in top-ranked Iowa Western.

This Saturday, the Tritons get to face the program that hoisted that trophy a season ago.

No. 17 Garden City visits Dodger Stadium for the final home game of the season for Iowa Central on Sophomore Day.

Kickoff is at 11 a.m.

After taking a 14-13 lead midway through the second quarter, the Tritons (0-9 overall) didn’t score again, falling 62-14.

“It has been business as usual this week as we hope to build off the positives from our first half vs. Iowa Western and correct the negatives,” ICCC head coach Kevin Twait said. “But it doesn’t get a whole lot easier for us going from Iowa Western to Garden City.

“They are a really good team with a lot of speed on defense. Also, their special teams are tremendous and that is a big concern.”

B.J. Phillips was 8 of 16 passing for 149 yards with two touchdowns to Mikal Baker for 112 yards. Carlton Todd also caught three passes and E’Quan Dorris led the ground unit.

Phillips has completed 50 percent of his passes for 983 yards with five touchdowns. He is also the leading rusher with 394 yards and three scores.

Chris McLeod has a team-high 17 catches for 246 yards, with Todd adding 14 for 237.

Iowa Central’s defense was led by Le’Vonte Larry, who made 14 tackles, and Logan Stewart, who had 12. Jaden Foster and Connor Backens each recorded a fumble.

Larry leads the team with 80 tackles, with Derrion Fountain adding 54 and former Manson Northwest Webster standout Tim Butcher 51 with 7.5 for loss.

The Tritons conclude their season next Saturday at No. 10 Butler. Unless they fall out of the rankings, the game will be the fifth vs. a current member of the Top-25 for them this year.

“We’ve been close here a few times and at some point, we are going to knock that door down and get a victory,” Twait said. “There would be nothing better than doing it on the final home game for the sophomores.”

Garden City (6-3) is coming off a victory over the Air Force Prep team to go along with a 41-14 triumph vs. Dodge City. They are 4-1 over the last five, with the lone loss coming to the Reivers, 41-14.

Terry Wilson is completing 57 percent of his passes for 1,511 yards with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also has 386 yards rushing and four scores on the ground.

Wilson is a transfer from the University of Oregon, where he was battling Justin Herbert and Travis Jonsen for the quarterback job this past spring. He is originally from Oklahoma.

Daniel Davis and Nigel Kilby average 100 yards receiving and have caught nine touchdowns, with Charles West the leading rusher at 80 yards per game with seven scores.

As a team, Garden City averages 30 points and 372 yards of total offense, allowing 25 points and 343 yards per game.

The Broncbusters are currently tied with Butler in the KJCCC for second behind Independence. They finish out the regular season at Fort Scott next Saturday.
