Gaels win five-set road match

CLEAR LAKE — The St. Edmond volleyball team earned their first five-set road victory in six years here Tuesday, topping Clear Lake.

Scores were 25-18, 25-12, 24-26, 10-25 and 15-10.

The Gaels (9-6 overall) last won a five-set road match in 2011. That also took place against the Lions (3-8), with their last five-set win overall coming three years ago vs. Clear Lake.

“The seniors had a solid performance and really came through for us in the fifth set,” SEHS head coach Dee Huss said. “When we play as a team and believe in each other, we can do amazing things.

“I’m really proud of the girls.”

Hannah Huss had a team-high 15 kills, serving 16 of 17 with two aces. Josie Huss added nine kills and two aces, with Erin Flattery (nine kills) and Hannah Schaeffer (eight) right behind.

Macey Mason had three aces and was 15 of 16 serving, with Livi Huss recording 35 assists. Huss also noted that sophomores Cambrie McBride and Rylee Kinney “stepped in and gave us some key time on the court.”

“Everyone was doing their part and it was so fun to see them play with such confidence,” she added. “They really showed true grit and did not back down.”

St. Edmond returns to the court this Thursday at Eagle Grove against both the Eagles and Southeast Valley beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Clear Lake won both the junior varsity (21-19, 21-19) and freshman (19-21, 21-19, 18-16) matches.
