Williams runs over Lions
WEBSTER CITY — The sixth-ranked Webster City football team struggled in the first half, but put on a running clinic in the second half to earn a 41-27 victory over No. 10 Clear Lake on Friday night.
The Lynx (2-0 overall) trailed 20-7, but the tides turned to start the second as running back Zane Williams took the opening possession 68-yards for a score.
Williams also had a 30-yard and an eight yard touchdown as well.
Dylan Steen threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Tanner.
Steen also had a five-yard touchdown run.
Williams finished with 25 carries for 197 yards and three scores.
Steen had 18 totes for 108 yards and was 3-for-8 passing for 73 yards.
Busse throws five TDs
HAMPTON — Joey Busse made his debut under center for Humboldt here Friday night one he’ll never forget.
Busse threw five touchdowns — four of which went to Jamison Heinz — and finished with 333 total yards of offense in a 34-20 victory over Hampton-Dumont.
After missing the opener last week, Busse exploded in the opening half. The junior was 8-for-13 passing for 223 yards and three scores in the first 24 minutes, finishing 14 of 28.
Heinz, who started under center a week ago, finished with seven catches for 188 yards and the four touchdowns.
Busse’s other passing touchdown was a 62-yard connection with Eli Sande.
Humboldt (1-1 overall) faces Spencer next week in a Class 3A, District 1 opener. Spencer picked up a 33-12 victory over Central Lyon Friday night.
Triple threat for Mustangs
NEWELL — The fifth-ranked Newell-Fonda football team cruised to a 49-6 victory over Glidden-Ralston on Friday night.
Austin Gerdes returned a punt 53 yards for a score, a kickoff 64 yards to paydirt and had a four-yard scoring run.
Cody Holtgrewe threw three touchdown passes for the Mustangs (2-0 overall). Hotgrewe hit Nate Pedersen on three scoring strikes from 30, 10 and one yard out.
Jesse Haack had a 69-yard touchdown run.
Muhlbauer throws for 202
MANNING –The South Central Calhoun football team earned a 42-28 victory over IKM-Manning on Friday night.
Hunter Muhlbauer paced the Titans (1-1 overall) with three overall touchdowns. Muhlauer was 9-for-13 passing for 202 yards. He threw touchdown strikes to Joey Schrage of seven and 17 yards. He also ran in a 13-yard touchdown.
Tanner Macke had two touchdowns, scoring from 40 and four yards out. Chase McAlister added a four-yard touchdown run.
Jonathan Frantz led the ground game with 15 carries for 100 yards.
McAlister had two interceptions and Muhlbauer had one.
