LONDON, England — Vicky Flores is on her way at Wimbledon.

The 18-year-old Fort Dodge native earned a pair of straight-set qualifying victories on Thursday and Friday to reach the main draw at Wimbledon’s Junior Championships.

As the No. 4 seed in the qualifying bracket, Flores defeated Joanna Garland, 6-3 and 6-3, and Malene Helgo, 6-4 and 7-5, to advance. The Georgia Tech University freshman-to-be will now compete in both the singles and doubles bracket at the All England Tennis Club.

Flores’ first singles match is scheduled for Monday against 16-year-old Maja Chwalinska of Poland. The winner will face either fifth-seeded Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine or Kaja Juvan of Slovakia.

Flores is currently ranked 947th in the world among overall singles competitors, and 1074 as a doubles player. She recently moved into the Top-50 of the junior world rankings by capturing both the singles and doubles titles at the International Tennis Foundation Junior Tournament in Offenbach, Germany in June.

”I didn’t play my best tennis like I know I’m capable of, but I just know that my fight and determination got me the two titles,” Flores said after her wins in Germany last month. ”I think that was the best part about the week — not playing my best, but still finding a way to win.

”(Being No. 48 in the world) is insane, because at the end of last year, I was just happy to move from about 800 to 400.”

Flores, the daughter of Fort Dodge’s Manny and Mary Ann Flores, attended Feelhaver Elementary and Fair Oaks Middle School. She has already reached main draw of the junior division at the U.S. Open in September.
