CLEAN SWEEP

Fort Dodge softball coach Andi Adams still has some question marks about her 2017 softball team.

One thing is for sure, though: these Dodgers can score runs in bunches.

The No. 7 (5A) Dodgers put up 29 runs against Marshalltown here Tuesday night on the way to a pair of lopsided victories at Harlan and Hazel Rogers Park.

Fort Dodge won the opener 13-3 in five innings and took the nightcap 16-4 in four frames.

“We really hit the ball hard,” said Adams, whose team is now 5-2. “We just adjusted very well. That’s something we’ve talked about, adjusting to pitching. If the wind wasn’t blowing in, I think we may have had five home runs.”

The Dodgers banged out 10 hits in the first game and added 14 in the second contest. They got complete-game pitching efforts from Bre Tjebben and Meagan Hartman.

“Our pitching was pretty good. I thought Bre did a great job after we got behind. She didn’t let that get to her,” Adams said.

Fort Dodge trailed 3-1 in the opener before putting up back-to-back four-run innings.

“Even when we are down I know we are going to score runs,” said Adams. “They got those three out of gate, but I knew we’d score.

“We are still trying to find spots defensively. We just aren’t crisp defensively yet,” Adams added.

Adams shuffled her lineup in the opener, starting 8th grader Tristin Doster at catcher and moved all-stater Maggie Harvey to third. She also had freshman Loghen Schnetzer at shortstop in place of Daphne Alstott, who is dealing with a cut on her throwing hand.

Harvey sparked the Dodgers again, scoring three times from her lead-off spot in the opener. Aubrey Davis added a two-run double and scored twice as well. Tjebben had two hits as did Mack Provin. Provin also had a double.

Alstott was able to courtesy run and stole three bases and scored twice.

Marshalltown (0-5) committed five errors in the opener and had six more in the second game.

Fort Dodge left little doubt in the night cap, scoring six times before Marshalltown recorded an out in the game and finishing with a 10-0 lead after the first frame.

It was 11-0 before Marshalltown scored four times in the third inning.

The Dodgers scored five runs in the fourth inning to end the game.

Harvey was 3-for-4 and scored three times in the second game. Tjebben was 3-for-3 with a double while Tehya Miller added three hits including a two-run double. She swiped two bases as well.

Schnetzer had two hits in the nightcap.

“The bottom part of our lineup is doing a phenomenal job,” added Adams. “That’s perfect.”

The Dodgers are off now until Saturday when they play Indianola and Des Moines Lincoln in the Valley shootout.
