No. 8 Humboldt now 31-1

HUMBOLDT – The eighth-ranked (Class 3A) Humboldt volleyball team put an exclamation point on the regular season here Thursday, sweeping St. Edmond.

Scores were 25-13, 25-2 and 25-22.

“I was really proud of the way the girls bounced back and battled in the third,” said St. Edmond head coach Dee Huss. “Our defense was much better and we did a nice job of taking care of the ball and staying in the point (in the third set).”

The Wildcats (31-1 overall, 7-0 in North Central Conference) had already clinched the league crown last week. Their only loss was to No. 14 (4A) Waverly-Shell Rock in the finals of the Mason City Invitational this past weekend.

Taylor Gidel led Humboldt with 11 kills, while Sydney Lane added 10 and Abby Zaugg eight. Beth Duffield had 11 digs, Olivia Hildreth 10 and Kelsey Peters recorded 33 assists.

On the season, the Wildcats lost just two sets in league play – one each to Iowa Falls-Alden and Hampton-Dumont.

The Gaels had 18 kills and six aces on 37 of 39 serving.

The St. Edmond junior varsity team lost two games.

The freshmen lost 21-10 and 21-14.

Next up for both teams will be regional play, as the Gaels host Paton-Churdan on Tuesday and Humboldt welcomes NCC rival Algona on Wednesday.
