Taking center stage with Emma Alstott

Giving it her all; No matter the activity or event Alstott put everything into it

With everything she did over the course of her high school career, St. Edmond Catholic School senior Emma Alstott gave it her all.

Alstott, who was heavily involved as a Gael in a number of activities and athletics, hopes that is what makes up her legacy.

“I hope that future St. Edmond performers remember me as the person that put 100 percent into everything that I did,” she said, “no matter how hard it got.”

Alstott, who will be attending Iowa State University in Ames in the fall, was involved in speech, choir, Play Like A Champion committee, student government, Fine Arts Showcase, musical stage crew, St. Edmond Honor Society along with volleyball, basketball and track.

“Personally it means so much to me to be involved because some people in my family that came before me never had the opportunity to be involved,” Alstott said. “Both of my mom’s parents specifically never had the opportunity to be involved in sports, the arts, or other activities.

“Because of this I have always taken advantage of every opportunity I have gotten. I have so many different interests and I feel so grateful that I can be involved in activities that relate to all of these interests.”

She also saw first-hand just how important being active at the high school level can be by watching her mom, Josephine Alstott, interact with students.

“I think my desire to perform comes from the fact that I grew up surrounded by so many different activities. I remember watching the Humboldt hurdlers run while my mom coached and thinking at that point that I was going to run hurdles like that,” she said. “I remember seeing my aunt and uncle be involved in 4-H and suddenly being so excited to join myself.

“Ultimately it was watching the people I looked up to love everything they did that made me so eager to do what they did. Some of the people I look up to are my mom and my grandfather, Larry Luhring. They are both such hard-working Christian people that are amazing role models.”

At Iowa State, Alstott will be pursuing majors in agronomy and global resource systems with a minor in Spanish.
