Gaels aim for 4th straight state bid

The third-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team will play for a fourth consecutive trip to the state tournament here Monday night.

Following a convincing 11-3 victory in five innings over Collins-Maxwell at Rogers Park last Friday, the Gaels are set to host Martensdale-St. Marys for the Region 3 championship.

First pitch is at 7 p.m.

St. Edmond (24-9 overall) erased a 2-0 lead with a four-run first, scoring in each of the next three innings to put the Spartans away. Baylor Ulrich had a home run, Breckyn Ulrich drove in three and both Ella Vandi and Faith Shirbroun each had two hits.

The Gaels, who lead the state in stolen bases with 229, swiped six in the game.

Shirbroun, who holds virtually every career SEHS hitting record, is batting over .600 with 51 runs scored and 46 RBI. Vandi is also hitting over .400, as Sophia Schlienz, Jade Rock and Rihanna Myers are batting over .320.

Toryn Helle owns 19 wins inside the circle, striking out over 100 batters. After allowing a two-run homer vs. Collins-Maxwell, she retired the next eight batters she faced.

St. Edmond has never qualified for the state tournament four years in a row. They reached the semifinals last season for the second consecutive time, placing fourth at Rogers Park.

Martensdale-St. Marys (15-15) knocked off Ankeny Christian in the regional semifinals to advance, 8-0 in five innings. The Blue Devils are led by junior Shelby Woods and freshman Ella Cassady.

Woods is batting .432 with 38 RBI, four homers, nine doubles and five triples, while Cassady has a .404 average, driving in 19 with 30 runs scored. Maclaine German is the top pitcher, striking out over 80 in 90-plus innings pitched.

Martensdale-St. Marys owns two wins over the Gaels all-time, with both of them coming at the state tournament. The Blue Devils won in 2024, 2-1, and the year before, 1-0.

Starting at $4.62/week.
