Davis convicted of 4 of 8 charges

Matthew Davis

A Webster County jury has convicted a Harcourt man of four of the eight sex crime charges he was facing.

Matthew J. Davis, 42, was on trial for the past week for four counts of third-degree sexual abuse and four counts of incest. The case wrapped up after four days of testimony with closing arguments on Tuesday afternoon.

The jury began deliberating Wednesday morning, taking most of the day. After nearly seven hours of deliberation, the jury found Davis guilty of two of the third-degree sexual abuse counts and two of the incest counts, acquitting him of the remaining counts.

“We were hoping to find justice for the victim and their family and we did, unfortunately it wasn’t on each count, but we certainly respect the tough job that the jury had to do and respect their decision,” First Assistant Webster County Attorney Ryan Baldridge said.

Davis faces up to 10 years in prison for each sex abuse charge and up to five years for each incest charge. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.

Starting at $4.94/week.
