Where do you teach?

Duncombe Elementary

What grade/subject do you teach? 4th grade

Why do you teach?

I teach because I believe in kids. I believe they can, and will, change our world. If I can help them reach their potential or at least begin the journey to reach their fullest potential then I believe I have done my job. I also want to help them become strong individuals who work to be understanding and kind to others.

What is your favorite part of the school day?

My favorite part of the day is morning meeting. It’s a chance for kids to greet each other and share something about themselves. The sharing topic is different each day, so I learn a lot about the kids and they learn a lot about each other during this time. We also have an activity each morning that really helps build relationships and teamwork.

What are you working hardest on right now?

I am working hard at finding ways to help students build ownership of their learning and believe that they can be successful. I want them to see all the potential they have and understand that each person is unique and brings something special to the world. My goal is to help them understand that making mistakes is OK and that everyone learns differently and at a different pace. So many times kids compare themselves to their peers and feel inadequate. I’m trying very hard to create an environment where they understand and embrace their own differences and the differences of others around them.

What are you most proud of as a teacher?

I am most proud of the relationships that I build with students. It’s not the test scores or that whatever percent of my class is considered proficient in math or reading, it’s the way the kids feel when they are in my classroom. I just want them to feel appreciated and valued. There’s nothing better than when past students stop by to say hi or send me a note or see me in public and come up to give me a hug.

What makes you happiest as a teacher?

I am happiest when I watch the kids have a breakthrough when they have been struggling with something. We celebrate all steps towards success and when they “get it” it’s great! One other thing that makes me happy is watching the kids smile. Seeing smiles on their faces just makes my heart very happy.

How do you contribute to/how are you involved in our community outside of school?

I do not live in Fort Dodge but I try to keep up on things that are going on in the community. I work to support drives for food, clothing and/or household items for those in need. I have helped with local church events, and I support school activities in the community, such as sporting and music/drama events.

What are your interests/hobbies outside of school?

My favorite thing to do outside of school is to spend time with my friends and family, especially my grandkids. I enjoy being out on the lake on a boat and spending time on a beach. At home, I enjoy reading, doing puzzles and spending quality time with my dog. I also love to watch football.

What do you wish your students/families knew about you?

I wish my students and families knew how much I really care about them. I think about/worry about my students all the time. I want nothing more than for them to be successful, both academically and socially. I wish for happiness for them and their families every day.

What does Together We Rise mean to you?

Together we rise means it takes us ALL. Every person in our school, big and small, and our community is important in the success of our district. If we work together to support our students, families, and staff, we will achieve great things.
