‘Careers on Wheels’ event set for April 25

Iowa Central Career Connections will host “Careers on Wheels” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 25 at Iowa Central Community College East Campus, 2031 Quail Ave. Rain date will be April 27.

Careers on Wheels is a unique event designed for fifth-grade students. Students will have the opportunity to learn about different careers that involve a set of wheels in their community by touring the vehicle and meeting the drivers. The drivers will have approximately 10 minutes each to interact with different groups of students that will be rotating through this experience. Drivers are encouraged to talk to students about the relevance of why they use or need a vehicle for their job, teamwork, responsibility, what a typical day is for them, or any other important information they are willing to share with the students.

One of the goals of this day is to expose students to career opportunities in our area, as well as raise awareness of the different businesses or organizations that exist in our community.

By providing students with opportunities to learn about careers starting at a younger age, it gives them time to figure out what they want to do after they graduate from high school. It is also used as a tool to ignite conversations about careers and potential coursework to prepare them for careers in the area. Not only is this an educational event but it is also a workforce tactic to recruit students to stay local starting at a young age.
