WEBSTER CITY — Kendall Young Library will be having variety of teen events throughout October. Teen Lounge — Patrons in sixth through 12th grade are invited each Tuesday in October from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Join us weekly for special activities, video games, snacks, crafts, board games, and more. This time and place is perfect to hang out with friends and is a come-and-go style event. Otho Betterment chili cook-off and Bloody Mary contest is Oct. 11

OTHO — The Otho Betterment Committee’s ninth annual chili cook-off and bloody Mary contest is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 11, at the Otho City Park. There will be kids’ activities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., silent auction from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Market at the Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bloody Mary public tasting is noon to 1 p.m. and is $5 per person. Chili public tasting is 2 to 3 p.m., or until the chili runs out, and is $5 per person. There will also be food trucks and raffles.

Lake City UCW holding ice cream social Sunday

LAKE CITY — Lake City Union Church Women are holding an ice cream social from 11 a.m. Sunday at the church in Lake City. The menu includes pulled pork sandwiches and homemade pie and ice cream for a freewill donation. Carryouts will be available.

Ancient Technologies Day is Oct. 18

Webster County Conservation is holding an Ancient Technologies Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18, at the Matt Cosgrove River’s Edge Discovery Center, 20 N. First St. How did people do things back in the day? This event will have demonstrations and hands-on archeology fun. There will be flint knapping, atlatl dart throwing, clay pot making, basket weaving, loom weaving, hide scraping, historic children’s games, papermaking and guest speakers. The event is free and open to the public.

FDPL hosting “Gangster in Our Midst: The Untold Story” author talk Monday

The Fort Dodge Public Library, 424 Central Ave., is hosting author Betty Brandt Passick, of Oakdale, Minnesota, at noon Monday. Brandt Passick, who grew up in Fairbank, Iowa, is the author of the award-winning historical novel, “Gangster in Our Midst, Bookkeeper, Lieutenant, and Sometimes Hitman for Al Capone.” She will present a 60-minute program on this Iowa story. Fairbank, Iowa, has the remarkable claim of hosting Alphonse Capone’s bookkeeper, Louie La Cava, for over 60 years.
