Open Class Horticulture Show set for July 25-26 in Humboldt

HUMBOLDT — An Open Class Horticulture Show will begin at 1 p.m. July 25 and run through 5 p.m. July 26 at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds in the Polka Building. Entries are open to the public from Humboldt and surrounding counties, with the exception of professional arrangers and florists. There are two age divisions: adults and youth (16 and younger). Entries will be accepted from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Judging begins at 1 p.m. Saturday and is open to the public to listen and learn from the judge. Keeping safe from tick-borne diseases

Searching for ticks following an outing is something many don’t do, but should, according to Angela Horvath, a doctoral student in occupational and environmental health at the University of Iowa. Horvath researches vector-born disease under U of I Professor Kathryn Dalton. Ticks begin as larvae, she said. “(At that stage), it literally looks like a speck of dust, so if you have a larvae on you, you’re unlikely to know you actually have one or have been exposed,” said Horvath. The Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge will present a special concert on Sunday evening, July 19th, starting at 7:30 pm, at the historic Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park. There is no admission charge, with these concerts being supported by the City of Fort Dodge. An ice cream social will precede the starting time and is provided by the Southeast Valley School Fine Arts Boosters for a freewill donation.
