Supports Nelson in Ward 2

October 14, 2023

To the editor: Many years ago, I was at campaign headquarters for an important local race. We were setting up to make phone calls for our candidate and, as always, looking for volunteers. In walked this teenage young man. I was skeptical , but glad for the help, put him to work. I soon learned that I had the future of Fort Dodge eagerly working. He came in early, stayed late and worked endless hours. When I asked why he was not off with friends or finding other activities, he shyly replied that this was important work. He believed whole heartedly in the candidate and wanted to assure ...

Wonders about Biden’s competence

October 11, 2023

To the editor: On Aug. 21, President Biden went to Hawaii to see firsthand the wildfire devastation, on Aug. 8, of Lahaina on the island of Maui. Of course he did. Hawaii voted Democrat in the 2020 presidential election. On Feb. 3, a train carrying chemicals derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, sending toxic fumes throughout the community and the surrounding area for miles. A few days later Biden promised that he would visit East Palestine. To this date he has not. Of course he hasn’t. Ohio voted Republican in the 2020 presidential election. It is, of course, a far greater tragedy in ...

Wonders what happened to unity

September 23, 2023

To the editor: Do you remember where you were and what you were doing on 9-11-2001? I will never forget that day. We were all Americans that day. We cried together and hugged each other and were so grateful we didn’t lose a loved one. Look at us today. We are so divided. Why? What has changed since that day? We need to start accepting one another even if they are of a different party or don’t believe the same things. Love one another. God bless America again. Janet Bird Somers

Expresses thanks for Honor Flight

September 23, 2023

To the editor: I would like to thank everyone involved in this 24th Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. It was great to go back as I was there for a short time during my service in the Army many years ago. I was happy to see all the memorials and was especially moved by the changing of the guard, the laying of the wreath and the playing of Taps. I would also like to thank all those who came out to send us off and welcome us back home. It was a privilege to be a part of this flight. Thank you all. Gary Clabaugh Army veteran Fort Dodge

Has questions about sports pavilion

September 20, 2023

To the editor: How many people in Webster County play pickleball or basketball? Don’t we have two high schools that already have four basketball courts? One even has a swimming pool that we all own with tax money. Here’s my idea for a new plaza. How about a track completely indoors for everyone to walk on all year long since mall has closed? Several friends have no where to walk, especially in the winter months. In the center two basketball courts with retractable baskets to play hand ball or tennis. How about a batting cage for all baseball players? Two pickleball courts that ...

Pipeline should be a federal decision

September 18, 2023

To the editor: Iowa citizens! It seems to me the CO2 pipeline is such a hazard to the people of Iowa. Approval of it should be from the Congress rather than a three-person utilities board. Eugene Anderson Fort Dodge
