Support the arts at Iowa Central

To the editor: (The weekend of April 26-28) nearly 4,000 people, young and old, crowded into the new state-of-the-art, Performing Arts Center on Iowa Central’s campus. Without having to travel to New York, they enjoyed a Broadway-quality performance of “Beauty and the Beast” featuring Iowa Central students. Displayed prominently in the lobby were the names of donors who helped make the center a reality. There is lots of room on that wall for the names of additional donors who want to ensure more performances and events for years to come. We would love to add your ...

Backs Fleener for sheriff

To the editor: I am writing this letter in support of Luke Fleener, who is running for re-election as the Webster County Sheriff. I have known Sheriff Fleener since 2007 when I began my employment with the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office. When Sheriff Fleener was a detective, I had the opportunity to work closely with him on many cases that crossed county boundaries. I always found Sheriff Fleener to have a keen eye for detail and drive to hold people accountable for their actions. I've also had the opportunity to attend multiple trainings taught by Sheriff Fleener. I will ...

Brother deserves to be re-elected as sheriff

To the editor: This letter is to encourage all Webster County residents to vote in the primary on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. A particularly important vote will take place that day, the re-election of Webster County Sheriff Luke Fleener. My brother’s story starts in Dayton, Iowa. Being from a small school, Luke could play sports and participate in music, and he did both. As his little sister, seeing him in musicals and show choir made me proud. As a competitor, he went out for every sport he could, and he excelled at them all. Being a cheerleader I had the opportunity to see every ...

Wants Fleener back as sheriff

To the editor: There’s no question Luke Fleener has been an outstanding sheriff. His commitment to the safety and protection of every citizen of Webster County is deeply felt by Sheriff Fleener and is reflected in the administration of his office. His passion to protect children from internet threats and to educate us all as to the nature of the threat have been comforting and inspiring. I was one who spoke against Sheriff Fleener’s plan to keep guns out of the courthouse, but on further reflection I was wrong. I support Iowa’s gun laws we have now, but to allow guns in a place ...

Don’t blame Republicans for border mess

To the editor: Back in March President Biden presented his State of the Union address. The mainstream media and Democrats promoted the address as an opportunity for Biden to showcase his mental state and put to rest the prevailing thought that he (Biden) was lacking in mental capacity to be president another four years. Whatever his handlers gave him worked. On the upside, he had enough energy to shout and raise his voice virtually the entire speech. On the downside, he spoke fast and at times mumbled and slurred his words. At one point he was shamed into saying the name of the young ...

Offers suggestion for Dodger Stadium

To the editor: I have great memories of the old locker room at the stadium in the ’70s. The field, track and baseball field are the best in state, maybe the whole Midwest. Here’s my problem. I see we are finally going to upgrade the locker rooms, lunch and snack bar for games, and front entrance. I would like to see it placed on north of bleachers between baseball and football fields. That way football in fall, track, soccer and baseball teams could change, use to warm up and change into proud Fort Dodge uniforms. Also umpires and officials could use. Another concern is the ...
