Playing No. 2 (Class 3A) Humboldt for the second time in four days, Nick Clark saw plenty of positives from his St. Edmond softball team.

The end result, though, was a 6-1 defeat for the Gaels here Monday night at Rogers Park.

Freshman Ellie Jacobson recorded nine strikeouts and drove in two for the Wildcats (19-2 overall, 9-1 in North Central Conference). Kelsey Peters added three hits, with Carlie Thompson, Mady Lange and Olivia Birdsell had two each.

Jacobson faced just the minimum over the first four innings, striking out six. She had a two-RBI double in the seventh at the plate against St. Edmond (6-10, 4-6).

“I’m happy with how we played,” SEHS head coach Nick Clark said. “That’s the No. 2 team in the state in their class and we played them tough twice in a short amount of time. We kind of let it get out of hand there in the seventh, but our kids competed.”

Jacque Oberg had a pair of stolen bases and scored the lone run for the Gaels, while Erin Flattery had an RBI. Flattery and Sydney Nelson had the only two hits off Jacobson, who had 11 strikeouts last week against SEHS.

“We made really good contact all night, (Humboldt) just had us scouted very well,” Clark said. “Credit them for making the plays in the field. If we can keep hitting the ball that well moving forward, we’ll win games.”

Thompson also had a stolen base and drove in a run from her leadoff spot, while Lange added a steal, a run scored and an RBI. Taylor Gidel also had a productive game, scoring a run, driving in a run and swiping a bag.

Humboldt, which entered the night with over 100 stolen bases on the season, added four more. They have gone 32-6 since 2015 in league, including winning the title last season.

Next action for the Gaels will be Tuesday night when they host non-conference foe Saydel, while the Wildcats meet Clear Lake in NCC action on Wednesday.

Both teams also received their postseason assignments on Monday, as the Gaels open 1A, Region 3 action on July 3 against Coon Rapids-Bayard. Humboldt hosts Gilbert in a 3A, Region 3 first round contest on July 5.

In the junior varsity contest, Humboldt won 8-6. Ella Vratny led the St. Edmond offense at the plate.
