For the final time in the regular season, six Fort Dodge seniors wrestled in front of their home crowd.
It was another dominant win for the 14th-ranked Dodgers (6-3 overall), as they picked up a 47-19 victory over Marshalltown on Thursday. FDSH won nine of 13 matches, all by bonus points.
Seniors Caiden Fraher (157 pounds), Rylee Brown (165), Jesse Egli (190) and Dreshaun Ross (285) all earned victories on the mat. Classmates Angel Sandoval (138) and Hunter Kasperbauer (132) fell. Senior Sam Davidson is currently injured.
“This is a good group,” FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson said of his seniors. “It’s an end to a couple of eras for the Dodger programs, being the last Ross, the last Egli, the last Davidson and the last Kasperbauer (of this generation).
“They have shown consistent leadership and are really bringing these young guys along. Dreshaun could be off in Oklahoma, but he’s here hanging out with these guys.”
Thursday also marked the last home dual for Thompson, who has coached the Dodgers for the past 20 seasons. He is now 306-150 in his career and 184-90 at FDSH.
“It’s hitting home (retiring) a little more after each event,” Thompson said. “The last home dual meet, the last (Ed) Winger meet (in Urbandale this weekend), last conference meet.
“I don’t think it will truly hit home until the last match on Saturday night in February (at state), though.”
Combined in their four victories, the seniors had three technical falls and a pin, out-scoring their opponents a combined 70-12.
Thompson will finish as the all-time winningest coach on the mat in duals at FDSH. Ed Birnbaum is second with a career mark of 165-79, just ahead of both wrestlers’ mentor Don Miller (117-40-3).
Fraher (14-10) began the onslaught at the end when four seniors, along with junior Jayce Skow at 175, prevailed five of the final six matches. Fraher earned a 20-5 technical fall in 4:31.
Brown (18-6) kept the momentum going with a tech fall over Carson Wright, 20-4 in 5:41. Egli (19-6) then pitched a perfect 15-0 tech fall in 1:56 over Kieron Sharp at 190.
Ross (22-0) had a 15-3 lead before pinning Ignacio Macias in 1:14 to cap off the dual.
Ross, the Oklahoma State University signee, has won 124 consecutive matches as a Dodger and is 133-2 overall in his high school career.
Ross is now tied with Jonah Egli (2016) for 11th on Fort Dodge’s all-time win list. He is second to Brody Teske (.994) for all time win percentage at .992.
Brown now has 108 career victories. Egli is at 107.
Freshman Knox Ayala (20-4) started the dual with a quick 18-3 technical fall over Jarris Piscitelli of Marshalltown in 2:09.
Sophomore Damien Yeoman (18-8) had a tech fall of his own in 4:18 (21-6) over Nicholas Million at 113.
Dodger junior Trace Rial (18-6) followed with a 16-0 shutout of Corral Coronado in 2:38 at 120. Freshman Aaron Perez (3-3) picked up the other fall of the night in 1:51 over Israel Garcia at 126.
“It was a night for the seniors, but the underclassmen performed well,” Thompson said. “Knox, Damien, Trace and Aaron came out and wrestled aggressively.”
The Dodgers are back in action on Saturday at Urbandale for the Winger Invitational.
