Champion Gaels dominate all-NCC softball teams

Messenger photo by Britt Kudla: St. Edmond senior Mariah Myers was again a unanimous first team all-NCC selection.

The St. Edmond softball team had just one minor bump in the road on their way to a third consecutive outright North Central Conference title this past summer.

And for their efforts, the Gaels were rewarded with all nine regulars making one of the three all-conference teams.

St. Edmond has won at least a piece of four consecutive NCC championships, becoming the first sport in school history to do so. They have also qualified three straight times for the Class 1A state tournament, with their 2025 quarterfinal on Iowa Central Field (Diamond 2) Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. against Wapsie Valley.

Earning unanimous first-team status were seniors Mariah Myers and Lauren Gibb, junior Faith Shirbroun and freshman Toryn Helle. They were joined on the first squad by senior Ansley Oswald and sophomore Sophia Schlienz.

Senior Hadley Oswald and eighth-grader Rihanna Myers made the second team. Sophomore Myrah Lemon was on the third.

“The girls worked hard and deserve these honors,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “We made it one of our goals to win the NCC title for a fourth straight time, and we were able to accomplish that because of the work these girls put in.”

Algona’s Allison Trunkhill and Hampton-Dumont/CAL’s Charlee Morton were the only other unanimous picks. Trunkhill’s teammates, Reagan Haynes and Ryan Haynes, joined her with first-team status.

St. Edmond was 13-1 in league contests.

Myers, who will play at the University of Iowa in the fall, hit .517 in NCC play with five homers, 30 runs scored and 17 RBI. She was walked 27 times, adding three doubles, three triples and 23 steals, which also led the conference.

Gibb, an Iowa Central recruit, posted a league-leading .615 average during NCC action with 12 extra-base hits, 24 RBI and 15 runs scored, stealing 14 bases.

Shirbroun contributed a .489 average with two homers, 16 steals and 21 runs scored, which ranked second to only Mariah Myers.

Helle, who replaced graduated first team all-NCC pick Kaili Henning inside the circle, was the conference leader in earned run average (1.54) and walks allowed (four). She finished second in wins (nine) and opponents batting average (.185).

Ansley Oswald led the league in sacrifice bunts. Schlienz ranked in the Top-5 in batting average, doubles, on-base percentage and sacrifice bunts for NCC games.

Trunkhill paced the conference in wins (10) and strikeouts (71), helping lead the Bulldogs to a 3A regional final.

Humboldt’s Abby Armitage, Claire Dieleman and Sadie Hubbell each made the second squad, as did Webster City’s Cloe Savitski. Algona had Maya Lentz and Kaitlyn Burns in that group.
