SPENCER — Lauren Gibb added another honor to her growing list of accomplishments here Monday.

Gibb, a St. Edmond senior, secured a Class 1A regional singles championship and punched her ticket to the upcoming state tournament.

Gibb, the No. 1 seed in the singles bracket, opened her day with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Dakoda Lux of Specner. She followed with another 6-0, 6-0 sweep vs. Sophia Patterson from Cherokee before downing Carley Rooney of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-0.

In the finals, Gibb posted a commanding 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Camryn Glass of Sergeant Bluff-Luton, who was the No. 2 seed.

“It feels great to be able to accomplish making it to the state tournament,” Gibb said. “I played a lot of great players, and I just knew if I played my game and focused, I could make it to the end.

“I definitely want to thank all of my teammates and (SEHS head coach) Shawn (Neverman) for always having encouraging words to say during a match. This was a goal of mine this year, and I worked really hard to achieve it.”

Payton Bradley finished fourth for St. Edmond in the singles draw. The doubles teams of Cambree Lunn and Ava Andrew, along with the tandem of Ava Underberg and Chloe Palmer, fell earlier in the meet.

Bradley, the No. 3 overall seed, advanced to the semifinals before falling in straight sets to Glass. She did not drop a set in her first or quarterfinal round matches.

As a team, the Gaels will now prepare for regionals on Friday. They host either Iowa Falls-Alden or Nevada at 1 p.m. at Dodger Courts.

The regional semifinals and finals will be played at Dodger Courts on Tuesday, May 20.

The 1A individual state tournament is May 30-31 in Waterloo at Black Hawk Tennis Club and Byrnes Park.
