Another successful day for Tritons at Drake

DES MOINES — The Iowa Central men’s and women’s track and field program had another successful day here Friday at the Drake Relays.

Competing against a number of four-year NCAA Div. I programs, the Tritons scored several Top-10 finishes, led by long jump winner Janae Dawes.

Dawes, a sophomore, had a busy day for Iowa Central, competing in two relays in addition to the long jump. She went 19-7.5 on her first attempt of the university/college division, a mark that held up throughout the rest of the rounds.

Abby Venhaus of Eastern Illinois was second, almost three inches back of Dawes, as Chicago State’s Makiyah Brewton placed third.

Fellow Triton Maeva Goune Tibbolo was fourth, as the sophomore went 19-1.5.

Said Rifi Loutfi was second in the men’s 800-meter university/college race, clocking a time of 1:49.18. He moved from ninth after the opening 400 meters to second behind Braxton Bruer of Minnesota Distance Elite, who finished in 1:49.13.

Bruer is ranked in the Top-400 in the world in the 800 while Loutfi is in the Top-600 among all runners for the event.

Taha Ouchene of Iowa Central was eighth in the same race in 1:50.14.

In the women’s sprint medley relay, the quartet of Brianna Wilson, Allecia Johnson, Dawes and Abbigail Hutchinson finished second, winning their heat before getting overtaken by Loras for gold.

The Tritons had a time of 4:03.59, as Loras went 4:01.33. Hutchinson was also fourth in the Steeplechase on Thursday.

Akram Mouaki kept the momentum going for Iowa Central, placing sixth in the men’s shot put university/college division. Mouaki had a throw of 55-9.25, which came on his fourth attempt, in addition to marks of 55-6.25 and 54-7.25.

Soufyane Laaziz scored eighth in the 1,500, clocking a time of 3:48.58. The sophomore took the lead late in the race, which was won by Missouri senior Lasse Funck.

Unitee Brown was ninth in the women’s shot put with a throw of 46-0. That attempt came on her first throw, as she also had marks of 45-2.25 and 44-25.

Dominic Ebensteiner qualified for the men’s 100-meter dash finals, placing eighth in the prelims in 10.49. He will race against all four-year runners in the finals, including University of Iowa sensation Kalen Walker.

Iowa Central’s women’s 4×100-meter relay of Dawes, Wilson, Chadrak Belinda Bula Bula and Mechak Linda Bula Bula just missed out on making the finals, finishing ninth in the prelims.

The Triton quartet went 47.41, as the final qualifying spot went to Wisconsin-Platteville at 47.32.

Mechak Linda Bula Bula was 10th in the 400, going 55.44, Brianna Wilson placed 15th in the 100 prelims in 11.90 and the men’s 4×100 of Lance Quiah, Dominic Ebensteiner, Alan Moen and Alan Lefevre was 16th in the prelims in 42.19.
