Benedict first FD 100-match winner

COUNCIL BLUFF — Fort Dodge’s Mariaha Benedict made school history on Saturday, but the Dodger junior wanted more.

Benedict became the school’s first 100-match winner in girls history, finishing second at the Council Bluffs Classic.

“Being the first person to get 100 wins is a big deal,” said Fort Dodge head coach Jon Koenig. “I’m super proud of her accomplishments and to see where she has come from her freshman year.”

The Dodger junior pinned Edie Collins of Raccoon River in 2:31 of the 135 pound quarterfinal. She picked up her 101st victory with a fall over Kassidy Fiala of Lewis Central in 43 seconds.

Benedict (27-2) finished second, falling to Millie Jensen of Millard South in the championship round.

“Jensen had similar strengths and Mariaha just got stuck on the bottom,” Koenig said. “We’ve been working on those things. Mariaha didn’t wrestle her best and she’ll tell you that. We’ve got to go back to the drawing board and work on things.

“The good thing about the loss is, it was against an opponent from another state and it won’t matter in regionals.”

The two-time state qualifier had three falls and two technicals in the two-day tournament.

Freshman Makayla Liska placed third at 155 pounds.

Liska advanced to the semifinals by medical forfeit. After falling by fall in the semifinals to Rowyn Wilitgren of Millard South, she finished with bronze, pinning Kalen Jo Westerfield of Lewis Central in 2:58.

Liska had four falls and a medical forfeit.

“Makayla did a great job coming off of an illness,” Koenig said. “In her last match, she was the aggressor in that match, getting the pin to secure third place.”

The Dodgers are back in action on Friday when they host the Fort Dodge girls Invitational in the Dodger gym.

Starting at $4.94/week.
