Bulldogs play for spot in semis
ALGONA — The last time the Algona football team reached the UNI-Dome, a Manske was at quarterback finishing up his sophomore season.
The same can happen this year with a win Friday night by the Bulldogs over Mount Vernon.
Kickoff in this Class 3A quarterfinal is set for 7 p.m.
Following a season-ending injury to senior Alex Manske, his brother, 10th-grader Nathan Manske, stepped in. Tyler Manske, the older brother, called the plays for Algona (9-1 overall) when they made the semis in 2019, falling to OABCIG and current Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Cooper DeJean.
Nathan Manske came on during a loss to fellow 3A quarterfinalist Humboldt, nearly leading the Bulldogs back. He has since helped them pick up wins over Webster City, Hampton-Dumont/CAL and Harlan.
In a 49-6 victory over Harlan, Manske led four opening quarter scoring drives, going 9-for-12 for 196 yards with three passing touchdowns. Tate Slagle caught five for 116 and two scores while William Weichert ran for 117 with a trip to the end zone.
On the year, Manske has 608 yards passing and eight touchdowns with no interceptions over 55 attempts. He has also rushed for 129 yards and two TDs.
Weichert, a junior, has 757 yards on the ground and nine touchdowns while Evan Allie is the leading receiver with 704 yards and eight TDs. Slagle, a University of Iowa baseball commit, has 32 receptions for 544 with 10 touchdowns.
Jack Limbaugh, who will join Alex Manske at Iowa State University next year, has a team-high five sacks, as Algona has 18 as a team with 60 tackles for loss and 15 turnovers.
Mount Vernon (9-1) is led by junior Kellen Haverback, who has thrown for 1,842 yards with 21 TDs. Cooper Hird has 685 yards rushing with 13 scores while Haverback has 10 rushing touchdowns.
Jase Jaspers, a top wrestler, has 51 receptions for 818 yards and eight TDs, as both Watson Krob and Michael Ryan have over 300 yards and 11 scores.
The Mustangs have not lost since a late September setback to Solon, 7-6, who is in the 3A quarterfinals. They have scored at least 42 points in all six games since.
Squaring off in the other matchups will be Solon, who travels to Humboldt, with Independence playing at Dubuque Wahlert and Nevada taking on Sergeant Bluff-Luton.
