Tritons score 33 runs in sweep

ESTHERVILLE — The 15th-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Iowa Central baseball team got into a strong offensive rhythm en route to a doubleheader sweep of Iowa Lakes here on Wednesday.

The Tritons (34-6 overall, 12-3 in the ICCAC) plated 33 runs in the twinbill, posting 17-5 and 16-6 victories at Hess Lemberg Field.

George McIntyre and Sawyer Stein had huge efforts in game one. McIntyre went 4-for-4 with two home runs, four runs scored and three RBI. Stein went deep and drove in four.

Sam Sejnoha was 3-for-4 and knocked in a pair. Parker Studtmann added three RBI.

Wyatt Myers, Bennett Burke and Will Specht also homered for Iowa Central. There were 10 longballs in the contest; seven were hit by the Tritons, who plated five runs in the second, third and fourth innings of the five-inning rout.

Maddux Gast was the winning pitcher.

“We got good production 1-9 in the lineup, which was a positive,” ICCC head coach Eric Stein said. “That kind of offensive balance will always help you win games. And Maddux going the distance without us having to use any arms ahead of a three-game set (at Northeast Iowa on Saturday and Sunday) was big.”

The Tritons remained perfect on the road this season with their rout in the second conest as well. Their 7-9 hitters — Ben Jones, Myers and Bryson Carpenter — combined to drive in nine. Myers and Carpenter both slugged home runs.

Specht recorded three hits. Seven different players crossed the plate twice.

“We carried that momentum over into game two (with seven runs in the opening frame),” Stein said. “We had a lot of guys contributing again, and it was nice to see the bottom of the order producing like that.

“We’re just trying to get healthy; we’re still banged up. But the good news is we’ve had a lot more guys get opportunities. We have a pretty deep crew.”

The Lakers fell to 8-16 and 5-13.

Iowa Central, which is in second place and a game behind third-rated Southeastern in the ICCAC standings, faces Northeast Iowa (25-18, 8-6) in Farley at 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.

Starting at $4.94/week.
