Gaels begin postseason baseball trek

The St. Edmond baseball team looks to carry over the momentum gained earlier this week when they begin postseason play here Saturday night.

Fresh off a 6-5 victory over West Bend-Mallard, the Gaels welcome in Gladbrook-Reinbeck to Rogers Park in a Class 1A, District 6 opener.

First-pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. with North Union and West Hancock squaring off prior beginning at 5 p.m.

St. Edmond (7-13 overall) earned the No. 2 seed in the district after starting the year off 6-3 with the only losses coming to 3A programs Webster City, Algona and Humboldt.

Senior Hayden Derrig leads the offense, hitting .434 with 17 runs, 15 steals, three doubles and two triples. The Central College-recruit is also 5-3 on the mound with a 1.86 earned run average and 89 strikeouts in 49 innings.

JT Laufersweiler, also a senior, is hitting .423 with 17 runs, 13 RBI, 11 steals and two home runs. He also has 18 strikeouts, two saves and a win.

For Gladbrook-Reinbeck (3-20), junior Drew Eilers sports a .321 batting average with 16 RBI, 10 runs and five doubles. Sophomore Hudson Clark is hitting .284 with 17 steals and 14 runs.

On the mound, Eilers has a 1.79 earned run average with 43 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched.

The winner between St. Edmond and Gladbrook-Reinbeck squares off with either North Union (9-11) or West Hancock (1-19) on Tuesday night.

Other postseason games with area teams involved include West Bend-Mallard vs. North Iowa in Algona, East Sac County at Missouri Valley, Belmond-Klemme at Bishop Garrigan, South Central Calhoun vs. Southeast Valley in Pocahontas, Eagle Grove vs. Clarion-Goldfield/Dows in Eldora, Newell-Fonda vs. Boyer Valley in Moville and Manson Northwest Webster at Pocahontas Area.
