Area golfers reach state clubhouse

North Union’s Drew Henderson capped off his high school golf career with a bronze medal Wednesday at the Class 1A state championships.

Henderson shot even-par in the second round from Westwood Golf Course in Newton, ending his two days at 1-over for the tournament. East Marshall’s Cody Weaver denied Keith Thompson from Hamburg a third straight state title, finishing at 6-under after back-to-back rounds of 3-under.

Thompson was second at even-par.

Henderson played both the par-4s and par-5s at 1-under for the day, recording four birdies on the round with 10 pars. He had three of those birdies on the back-nine holes, including two straight at Nos. 12 and 13.

Boyden-Hull won team gold in 1A over South Winneshiek and Harris-Lake Park.

At the 3A state championships in Waterloo from Gates Park Golf Course, Humboldt’s Cade Birdsell finished 11th overall.

Birdsell followed up his round of 74 with a 76 on Wednesday that included a birdie on both the front and back. The junior played the par-5 holes in 1-under on the day.

Nevada junior Parker Rodgers claimed his second straight title, shooting a two-day total of 5-under. Classmates Jaizik Miller of Spirit Lake and Grady Oleson from Marion tied for second at even-par.

Ballard won the team title by two strokes over MOC-Floyd Valley.

South Central Calhoun’s Charlie Nattress tied for 64th overall in 2A. The senior had four pars in the second round from South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo.

Grundy Center’s Judd Jirovsky won his second state title, as the Stanford commit shot 6-under for the day and 5-under for the tournament. He also won it as a freshman.

Waterloo Columbus claimed team gold with Rock Valley second and Aplington-Parkersburg third.
