GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Iowa Central distance program left a mark on the indoor national track and field championships here Friday.

With a blistering time of 9:44.89, the quartet of Jed Elmbarki, Musa Nkosi, Jadon Boots and Housem Hrabi claimed gold in the distance medley relay. That time broke the meet, facility, national and school record, as they won the race by less than a second.

Tina Samson gave the Tritons a second champion when she captured the pentathlon.

Freshmen Elmbarki and Nkosi — along with sophomores Boots and Hrabi — broke the meet, facility, national and school record. Elmbarki had a split of 2:59.9, Nkosi went 46.7, Boots clocked a 1:52.3 and Hrabi closed it with a 4:05.9 anchor.

Coming out of the second heat, Iowa Central was able to fend off Indian Hills and South Plains. The previous best NJCAA mark was set in 1993 by Barton at 9:47.17 while the facility record had belonged to Eastern Kentucky at 9:45.45.

It was a dominating performance for the Triton freshman from Nigeria, as she won the long jump and was second in the shot put and 800. Samson also tied for second in the high jump and was fifth in the 60 hurdles.

Samson scored 3,647 points to finish ahead of Maliyah Ross of Mesa and Amber Simpson from South Plains.

Zion Campbell clocked the fifth-fastest time in the 60 prelims to advance to the finals, while Nkosi earned a spot in the 200 finals with the seventh-fastest time.

Elmbarki scored a spot in the final event of the day with the third-best time in the 1,000.

Starting at $4.94/week.
