Mericle’s season finishes with 78 at district golf
St. Edmond junior Ty Mericle placed 10th in a Class 1A district boys golf meet, hosted by the Gaels at Lakeside on Monday.
Mericle carded a 78 for the Gaels.
“Ty played well, but it just wasn’t quite good enough,” said St. Edmond head coach Matt Dillon. “There are a lot of really good players in the district.
“You can see that in the top three.”
It was a competitive day all around, as the district team title and the individual championship all went to tiebreakers.
Coon Rapids-Bayard and Gladbrook-Reinbeck tied for the top spot. The title went to CR-B, as their fifth golfer had a better score. Earlham shot a 316 and also advanced to the state tournament.
On the individual side, Earlham teammates Will Harris and Blaine Vanderheiden both fired 74s. Harris won a playoff.
The top two golfers to advance that weren’t on qualifying teams were Blake Irvine (74) of Don Bosco and Lane Rose (75) of AGWSR.
“It was a really good day for those teams,” Dillon said. “All three were only separated by one stroke.”
After the storms that hit Fort Dodge on Sunday night and early Monday morning, the Lakeside crew — led by Chad Graaf — still had the course ready to go on time.
“Chad and his crew did an amazing job,” Dillon said. “They were there at 5 a.m. to get it ready.
“There was very little standing water on the course.”
