Believe it or not, hardly a rain drop hit the racers during the Fort Dodge Motocross Spring Classic at Sports Park Raceway over the weekend.

Some added track and dirt work was necessary due to the precipitation overnight both Friday and Saturday, but when race time arrived, the track was in near-perfect condition.

“It went really well. We were facing weather challenges, but we pushed through it,” said track promoter Justin Wallace, who put the race together alongside his brother, Zach Wallace. “Every morning we faced a new challenge, but with (the help of) Platinum Construction, Landon Rasch Construction, Ziegler and Mid-Country, we were able to get rolling. They were always the first ones there to help.”

Youngsters and experienced riders alike took to the popular dirt track just south of town on Saturday and Sunday.

“It was a nice race to get everything going,” Wallace said. “This was our spring race, and there will be more to come on June 20-21 for our big Iowa moto race.”

For those fans or riders who were in attendance here last year, the view and setup were a little different this time around.

“We ended up changing the track,” Wallace said. “We are always improving, hauling in mulch and sand and mixing it in.

“We are in gypsum country and have a lot of glacier teal and hard clay.”

The gates opened Friday at 4 p.m. for early arrivals.

“We got going on Friday late afternoon for the campers who were there,” Wallace said. “It was an easy night, and then Saturday morning, we kicked off.”

Some local Fort Dodge legends were in attendance and got back on the bike to compete. Champion Gavin Faith and Teddy Maier were both in action.

Izaih Clark, who is currently recovering from a broken femur, was in attendance as well. He is rehabbing in Fort Dodge.

“It’s awesome seeing those guys out there,” Zach Wallace said. “It’s cool to see them back home and getting their time in.”

Zach Wallace was pleased with the way the event unfolded as well.

“The track turned out great,” Zach said. “We were happy with the turnout and the way things went (time-wise) with the weather.”

Starting at $4.94/week.
