DES MOINES — Broedy Hendricks found a way to secure himself a spot in the semifinals, as the Wildcat freshman got by Benton’s Brenden Heying, 3-2.
Hendricks is the lone Humboldt wrestler still on the championship side with Owen Mayall and Tyce Clarken staying alive in the consolation rounds.
Up next for Hendricks (45-2) will be Max Gast of Osage, a senior who is 13-1 and the top-seed. Gast has scored back-to-back decisions at state.
Clarken (42-6) suffered a tough 6-0 loss to Union LaPorte City’s Jace Hedeman, a junior seeking his third state title, at 126 in the quarters.
Mayall (33-11) has won two consecutive since an opening round decision defeat, besting Jayson Johnson of Tipton by technical fall and downing Gabino Vargas of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in sudden-victory, 6-4, at 120.
Brady Beers and Jaxson Kirchhoff were unable to claim wins in consolation matches, with Beers ending his season 29-20 and Kirchhoff finishing up 38-14.
Algona
Tate Slagle moved into the semifinals and four other Algona wrestlers kept medal hopes alive for the Bulldogs.
Slagle, who has committed to play baseball at the University of Iowa, claimed a tough 1-0 decision over Talan Weber of Charles City at 150 pounds. The former state medalist, who is now 42-2 on the year, gets Union LaPorte City’s Caleb Olson in the semifinals on Friday.
Olson, the No. 3 seed, is a senior who is 45-1 overall. He posted a 3-0 decision in the quarterfinals to move on.
Isaac Wilson, Barrett Morgan, Ashton Moreno and Taevyn Zinnel all earned wins to remain active on the consolation side, while Elijah Wilhite and Brody Shipler were knocked off.
Wilson (40-6) scored back-to-back decisions at 120, first downing Caden Steinkamp from Center Point-Urbana, 11-2, before topping Mack Morgan of Eagle Grove, 8-5.
Morgan (36-12) was unable to solve defending state champion Blake Fox of Osage at 138 pounds, while Moreno (36-10) fell to his teammate and defending champ, Anders Kittleson, at 144.
Zinnel (37-6) was handed a 6-2 decision defeat to Greene County’s Gavin Scheuermann at 157.
Wilhite suffered a loss to Jacob Moeckly from North Polk, ending the year 29-18, and Shipler (25-20) fell to Brendan Lamfers after topping Webster City’s Carson Bertran at 190.
Eagle Grove
Day two presented a tough session for Eagle Grove, as all five qualifiers suffered losses in consolation round matches.
Dylan Terwilliger, Mack Morgan, Connor Christopher, Hayden Schafer and Jayden Kreitlow had their seasons come to an end.
Morgan, who posted a round one win before being knocked to the consolation side, downed Ryan Hartwig of Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, 9-1, to stay alive before falling to Algona’s Isaac Wilson, 8-5. He ended the year 32-14 overall.
Schafer went 1-1 on the day, downing Harlan’s Brody McKinley at 150, 6-0, before coming up short vs. Hewitt Brinegar from Monroe-PCM. He ended the year 28-10 on the mat.
Terwilliger dropped to 9-10 with a loss to Garrett Pumphrey from Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont at 106 pounds. Christopher finished 40-16 after a 7-4 loss to Carter Folkerts from Albia at 144 and Kreitlow went 30-19 with his final match being a 4-0 loss to Carroll’s Kieran Polking at 175.
Clarion-Goldfield/Dows
Following a pair of tough losses on the championship side, both Caleb Seaba and Ashtin Willms have kept hope alive for medals.
Seaba (32-10) was topped by Max Gast of Osage in the quarterfinals at 165 pounds, 10-7, and will need to earn a win on the consolation side Friday to secure a medal.
Willms (36-7) rebounded from a loss Wednesday with back-to-back decisions in the consolation rounds at 215. First, he topped Dre Smithburg from Fairfield, 6-2, before downing NCC rival Jake Trenary of Clear Lake, 5-0.
Hartwig suffered a 9-1 loss to Mack Morgan of Eagle Grove, ending his year at 27-11 overall. Allen fell to Leander Reicks from New Hampton/Turkey Valley, finishing up with a mark of 28-13.
