Area girls chase state medals

CORALVILLE — Jaymie Anderson is one match from earning a medal at state, and the Eagle Grove sophomore won’t take that opportunity for granted.

Anderson, a sophomore in her second straight state trip lost in the quarterfinals, but rebounded with two consolation victories to advance to the bloodround.

Anderson (35-5), the 12th seed at 125, pinned Maravilha Vedina (29-12) of Ottumwa in 2:44 of the first round. She lost by fall to Calista Rodish (48-5) of Raccoon River (2:37) in the second round.

Anderson then pinned Addie Nerem of Tipton (1:45) and Jadalynn Daily of Davenport (2:46).

She will now face ninth-seed Kaydn Meyer (37-8) of Southwest Iowa for the right to compete in the medal round.

Humboldt

Brooklyn Robinson (32-8) made it to the second day of the state tournament.

In her first appearance last season, Robinson lost both of her matches, but this time the junior won three on opening day.

She pinned Skylar Wegener of Northeast Community in 39 seconds. She lost to third-seed Ella Brown (31-0) of Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the second round.

Robinson then pinned Maci Bergmann of Tripoli (:43) and Emma Daniels of Carroll (1:34) in their 235 pound matches.

Robinson will meet seventh-seed Jocelyn Buffum (35-3) of Missouri Valley for the right to advance to the medal round.

Teammate Danica Diedrock (32-17) lost both her matches at 170 pounds.

Manson Northwest Webster

Seventh-seed junior Lucy Kohnen (34-5) advanced to the second round after a fall in 42 seconds over Emily Kesterson of Southwest Iowa at 145 pounds. She suffered a loss in the second round, before pinning Burlington’s Shariah Hart (1:56). She was eliminated from the tournament after losing to second-seed Dana Cleveland (40-2) of Ankeny.

Teammate Addi Hudek (27-18) lost both of her matches at 140 pounds.

Algona

So far the path has been the same for senior Harley Tobin (23-5). For two straight years she has made the 100 pound quarterfinal and lost.

Tobin is hoping that after Friday morning, she can pick up the win and reach the podium.

Tobin, the three seed, beat Kyla Schwager of Sheldon/S-O by fall in 1:07. She then knocked off Lauren Watson of Ankeny by fall in 3:05.

She lost her quarterfinal match to Chloe Sheffield (36-5) of Decorah by fall.

She will face No. 10 Sierra Becker (30-3) of Indianola on Friday.

Senior Gretchen Gorham (36-6) has also advanced to the blood round at 190 pounds. Gorham beat Crestwood’s Rose Niewoehner by fall (1:32). She lost in the second round and reeled off wins over Elvia Topete-Anzua (1:28) and Cadence Heggen (4:39) of Boone.

She will meet Kamryn Steines of Decorah on Friday.

Malyn Davis (120) picked up a fall and major decision before being eliminated. Reagan Haynes (170) had two falls to go along with two losses. Laura Stohr (11) won one match by major decision.

Abbe Gorham lost twice at 130 pounds.

East Sac County

Senior Jamie Pierce (11-8) lost a tight decision in the opening round against seventh-seed Kasee Huss of MOC-Floyd Valley, 8-6 at 155 pounds. She dropped her consolation match.

South Central Calhoun

Senior Evelyn Kramer (32-6) won her opening round match in her second straight trip. Kramer pinned Hinton’s Allison Hoefling in 1:09, before losing in the second round.

She bounced back with a fall in 3:02 over Laura Stoher of Algona (3:02) in their 110 pound match. She suffered her second loss to Karlena Buford (29-5) of Midland.

Emmetsburg

Anika Stearns (26-14) won one match at last year’s state meet, now the senior is one victory away from placing at 105 pounds.

Stearn advanced to the second round with a 7-1 decision over Kaelynn Roster of VintonShellsburg.

She lost in the second round to No. 2 seed Kacy Miller (34-0) of Western Iowa. Stearns stayed alive in the tournament with a fall (5:52) over Valeria Torres of East Buchanan and a 4-0 decision over Jacey Mason of Davenport.

Teammate Kylie Iverson (32-7) lost the opening match at 155 pounds. She bounced back with a fall in 2:50 over Tamson Budden of Sheldon/S-O. She was eliminated by a 6-1 decision to Kyleigh James of Mason City.
