Vogel places ninth at state swim for Dodgers

MARSHALLTOWN — Hailey Vogel and Julia Eastman didn’t finish where they wanted to, but now they know where they need to go to achieve their goals.

The Fort Dodge swim team competed at the state meet on Friday and Saturday.

Vogel, an eight-time state qualifier, came away with a ninth place finish in the 50 freestyle. The junior squeaked into the B final with a time of 24.92 in the 16th spot.

Vogel turned it up a notch in the final, placing ninth with a time of 24.73, 0.19 faster. Vogel was 18th in the 100 freestyle in 54.78.

“The prelims didn’t go exactly the way she (Vogel) wanted to and she barely made it,” said Fort Dodge head coach Ashley Beaumont. “The finals was exciting, she came from the outside lane to win the B final and we were all pumped up for that after the prelims.

“The 100 freestyle didn’t go how she wanted either. She had a good race at regionals and it’s hard to drop time.”

The Dodger 200 medley relay team improved .60 of second to earn a 14th place showing with a time of 1:52.35 after a qualifying swim of 1:52.95.

“This is very bittersweet for Raegan,” Beaumont said. “After the medley, there were so many tears. Her smile and hard work will be missed. She was a great leader and she wasn’t always the loudest, but she cares for everyone.

“She was one of the first ones I coached 10 years ago since being in the club and it’s kind of an end of era.”

Competing on the relay was senior Raegan Wooldridge, Vogel, classmate Julia Eastman and sophomore Gracie Harvey.

Eastman just missed reaching the B final in both the 200 IM (2:14.09) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.92).

The junior from Southeast Valley placed 23rd as a sophomore, but is now closer to reaching the finals after improving.

“Julia put so much pressure on herself,” Beaumont said. “She barely missed it and now she just has to enjoy the momentum after a great regional meet.”

The 200 freestyle relay team Eastman, junior Delaney O’Connor, freshman Kylen Lubensky and Vogel were 24th in 1:43.65, faster than qualifying.

“The girls are pretty excited about the medley,” Beaumont said. “Hailey had a fast split at 23 seconds and that was a great start to the finals. The 200 freestyle, that one was exciting. There are no seniors and they continue to drop time and we have set ourselves up to break the school records.

“All three (O’Connor, Lubensky, Harvey) had good times in the relays. Their goals are to continue to make the relays and try to qualify for individual events.”
