Gaels roll in ranked showdown

The youthful St. Edmond softball team showed plenty of poise here Monday night at Rogers Park.

After spotting No. 7 (Class 1A) Newell-Fonda a four-run lead, the eighth-ranked Gaels rallied, scoring 10 unanswered to secure a 13-5 victory in six innings.

Senior Faith Shirbroun blasted a solo home run in the third, finishing 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored to lead St. Edmond (2-0 overall). Rihanna Myers and Toryn Helle each had two-RBI hits in the seven-run fifth, as Helle earned the win, striking out five.

“That was a big win to get,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “Newell-Fonda is always a tough team and with the rankings — even this year — it’s important because of seeding come regionals. I thought our girls did a lot of good things out there.

“Obviously, there is still room for improvement, but I liked what I saw.”

After a tough first, Helle allowed just two hits and five baserunners the rest of the way, including 1-2-3 innings in the third, fourth and sixth.

“Toryn really settled down,” Shirbroun said. “She didn’t let that early home run bother her out there. It happens, especially in softball today. You’ve got to be able to flush the bad ones and move on.

“I thought our defense was strong behind her (committing just one error). We turned some nice plays and took advantage of the mistakes (Newell-Fonda) made.”

Ellie Sievers, an all-state basketball player who helped the Mustangs win the 1A state title this past winter, hit a home run on the first pitch she saw. She finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two steals, as Vienna Wingert drove in two.

The Gaels cut the 4-0 deficit in half in the first after Schlienz reached and scored on a double by Shirbroun. Ella Vandi also scored that inning after a single and steal.

In the third, Shirbroun blasted her homer, as St. Edmond went to work in the fifth, batting around. Jade Rock started it off by reaching on an error, as they had three hits and two walks in the frame.

“We were patient at the plate,” Shirbroun said. “We don’t have the same kind of hitters we had last year, so we’ll have to score like that most nights. We’ve got to put the ball in play, put pressure on the defense and be aggressive.”

In the sixth, Schlienz had a two-RBI single and Shirbroun drove in another run to end things early.

St. Edmond is right back in action on Tuesday, heading to St. Ansgar for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. Newell-Fonda travels to Storm Lake.
