Tritons are champs again

NORFOLK, Neb. — The fourth-ranked Iowa Central volleyball team put a cap on a sixth consecutive ICCAC regular season title here Wednesday, sweeping Northeast.

Scores were 25-19, 25-17 and 25-23.

The Tritons, No. 5 Kirkwood and 12th-ranked Des Moines Area all went 10-1 in the league this fall. Iowa Central earned a win over DMACC, the Eagles topped the Tritons and the Bears downed Kirkwood.

DMACC claimed the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Region XI Div. II Tournament via the tiebreaker, which begins at host sites next Wednesday. Iowa Central, meanwhile, is the three and will host Hawkeye at 7 p.m.

Noemia Chiacchio and Emma Bilhimer each had 10 kills for Iowa Central (28-4 overall), with Emily Goodner adding eight and Olivia Sturgis six. Mercedes Madlock picked up 36 assists, 10 digs and three aces, Mya McClain recorded 17 digs and an ace, Araya Garrison had five kills.

The regional tournament winner earns an automatic bid to the NJCAA Div. II National Championships with others eligible for wild card selections.

The Tritons will conclude the regular season on Friday at No. 9 Illinois Central.
