‘Lazy Ike’ show Saturday

This year’s Lazy Ike show will be at the Fort Dodge VFW Hall on Saturday.

The event, sponsored by the Lazy Ike Collectors Group, runs from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and is open to the public.

One of the largest collections of famous Lazy Ike lures — founded and made in Fort Dodge — will be on display. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own Lazy Ike lures or anything from the old Kautzky Sporting Goods and Lazy Ike factory in Fort Dodge to buy, sell or trade.

The VFW Hall is located at 518 South 29th St. in Fort Dodge.

As the legend goes, a fisherman from the area named Newel Daniels had been hand-carving what later became the Lazy Ike lure. After Daniels created the lure by hand from 1938-40, Joseph Kautzky Jr. — the son of Lazy Ike Corporation founder Joseph Kautzky — took over.

“Pop” Schuck was next in line. Wood production ceased by 1960, which gave way to a plastic version.
