Triton bowling teams look to carry on tradition

The Iowa Central bowling teams looks to continue its strong tradition this season on the lanes while also adding hardware to the case by competing in a new league.

The Tritons joined the Mid Iowa Bowling Conference this year to compete alongside the likes of Iowa Western, Iowa State and Northern Iowa.

“We are excited to get out and play teams from the conference,” ICCC head coach Gregg Haden said. “We are really excited to get started. We are looking to improve. We have a great group playing at a higher level than before.

“They have set their goals to win the conference and a national championship for both the men and women.”

Other teams in the MIBC include Hawkeye, Coe, Clarke, Luther, Waldorf, Nebraska-Lincoln and Wartburg.

Last year, both the Triton men and women placed fourth at nationals. They have scored four combined national titles under the guidance of Haden in recent seasons, including back-to-back gold for the women in 2020 and ’21.

Overall, Iowa Central has finished runner-up at nationals four times with the men and twice more with the women. They also have a collective six bronze finishes.

Among those back to lead the way include Lucas Campbell, Easton Lee, Ethan Schlapkohl, Steven Stone and Dawson Weber for the men, while Arianna Slusarek is the lone returnee for the women.

“We have a loaded freshmen class coming in,” Haden said. “They bring a lot of talent to both teams.”

Several of those newcomers are from the area including Carson Werning, Riley Travis, James Stubbs and Zachary Reeck. Werning was a key member of two state championship bowling teams at Fort Dodge Senior High.

Another ex-Dodger, Aryssa Lumsden, is on the women’s roster.

The Tritons open the year this weekend at the Midwest Collegiate Championships in Wauwatosa, Wis. The national championships are set for Feb. 29-March 2 in Lansing, Mich.

Haden will once again be assisted by Haley Hall.
