No. 15 Tritons back home
Following a bye and two lengthy road trips to Kansas, the Iowa Central football team returns home looking to get back on the track.
The 15th-ranked Tritons host Dodge City here on Saturday inside Dodger Stadium at 11 a.m. The contest will be part of hall of fame weekend for the school.
Along with the game, Tanner Aus, Morgan (Brown) Angotti, Sessions Harlan, Dan Cassady, Lisa Schimkat, Joseph LeValley and the 2007-08 women’s cross 3-4) country team will all be inducted into the Iowa Central Hall of Fame later Saturday evening.
Iowa Central (4-3 overall) dropped a 41-24 decision to No. 6 Butler, and have also suffered losses in Kansas to 10th-ranked Coffeyville (47-30) and No. 1 Hutchinson (31-28) around wins over Independence, Garden City, Ellsworth and College of DuPage.
Omarion Bartlett returned to action, throwing for 172 yards and rushing for another 42 with a touchdown. Justin Silverstein completed 14 of 19 for 118 yards and two scores, as Cal Weidemann caught a pair of TDs and Colton Hoag had the other.
Bartlett, Silverstein and Zach Marker have combined to throw for over 1,700 yards and 26 touchdowns with just seven interceptions on the year. Desna Washington, who continues to receive Div. I offers, leads the receivers with 26 receptions for 44 yards, while Weidemann has a team-high eight TDs.
On special teams, Kolben Miller has been effective for Iowa Central, averaging almost 43 yards per punt with nine of his 24 kicks being downed inside the 20. Kongolo Mwenemkamba and Liam Wahe have made all six of their field goal attempts and are hitting 83 percent on extra-points.
“The kids are excited and I feel like we’ve had a great week of practice,” ICCC head coach Jesse Montalto said. “We’ve had to take care of some things with our roster, making some hard decisions, but decisions that I feel will make our team better.
“We also just have to get healthy. Maybe we haven’t made all the right choices as coaches with redshirting kids and such, but we’ll get some key guys back and that should help.”
The Triton defense, which is allowing 27 points and 352 yards per game, is anchored by Rex Van Whye, as the freshman has 56 tackles. Deonte Bryant has 5.5 sacks and Demetrios Walker has 8.5 tackles for loss.
As a unit, Iowa Central has forced 18 turnovers, including 11 fumbles. They are plus-seven in the turnover department this year.
“We can’t turn the ball over,” Montalto said. “That hurt us last week. We’ve also got to do better on third-down and limit our penalties.”
Dodge City (3-4) has been tested, playing the likes of No. 2 Iowa Western and Hutchinson along with Coffeyville and Garden City. They have earned wins over Highland, Diamond Football Academy and last week over Ellsworth.
Grant Ciccarone has thrown for 947 yards with nine touchdowns, Mark McDonald is the leader on the ground with 454 yards and Javon Campbell has a team-high 302 yards receiving.
This will be the first of two consecutive home games for the Tritons, who host Iowa Western next weekend for the ICCAC title. They close the year at Highland on Nov. 5 before playing in a bowl game in Cedar Falls.
