FD golfer wins first career Habhab Am title at Lakeside

The new grandpa on the golf course still has a few tricks up his sleeve.

Lucas Peed showed the young bucks how it’s done on Sunday, capturing the 2022 Travis J. Habhab Amateur at Lakeside Golf Course. The 1992 St. Edmond graduate edged seven-time Habhab champ Kevin Ault and 2020 winner Austin Morrow by a single stroke, finishing at six-under par 102.

The 47-year-old Peed became a grandfather nearly two years ago, and now enjoys spending time with grandkids Tucker and Maren. That doesn’t mean the competitive juices aren’t flowing, though, once the three-time city gold medalist enters a tournament.

“It’s a matter of getting out and not just playing, but playing well again,” said Peed, who won the event for the first time in his career. “I got a lesson recently from (local professional) Judd (Gibb), and things have clicked since then. He knows my swing. Sometimes, in this sport, it’s just a small adjustment here or there that makes a big difference.

“I have Tucker out on the course with me a lot. I owe (the adjustments) to Judd, but the fun and perspective to Tucker.”

Peed and Charlie West both carded five-under par 67s in the qualifying round for the championship nine. Morrow (69), defending champ Cole Jaeschke (70), Cody Jaeschke (70), Scot Bergman (70) and Jordan Morrow (70) also landed in the red and within three strokes of the lead heading into the home stretch.

“It’s always a tough field, and there were a lot of guys who were right there. I knew there would be,” Peed said. “I just stayed aggressive and had to keep making birdies. I got one right away at (the par-5 10th), and another one at 13, which helped.

“Honestly, my putting was great. It was one of those days where I rolled a lot of putts in. If you’re doing that, you’re going to score well. The greens were fantastic and the course is in outstanding condition.”

Ault and Morrow both closed at five-under 103. West (104) was fourth, followed by the Jaeschke brothers (107) and Jordan Morrow (107).

Bergman (108), Andrew Huseman (109) and Eddie Doyle (111) rounded out the Top-10.
