Humboldt-heavy softball twinbill at Rogers Park

Rogers Park served as home for a mini-Humboldt reunion here on Friday afternoon.

The third-ranked Des Moines Area softball team swept Iowa Central in two games. Scores were 6-4 and 8-4.

For the Bears (38-3 overall, 16-2 in ICCAC), former Wildcat standouts Kendal Clark and Ellie Jacobson are both on the roster, while the Tritons (26-12, 9-5) feature Humboldt grads Carlie Thompson, Mady Lange and Jori Hajek.

Clark had three hits in the doubleheader, driving in two runs, scoring once and reaching on a walk. The freshman also had a double.

Thompson finished with three hits, two RBI, two runs and stolen base and a double, while Lange drove in a run and Hajek reached on a walk.

DMACC erased a 4-3 deficit with three runs in the seventh to take the opener. Emma Dighton hit two home runs and drove in three.

Freshman Riley Gilroy gave the Tritons a 4-3 lead with a homer in the fifth. She finished 2-for-4 while Olivia Harmon and Thompson also had two hits and scored a run.

Mackenzie Crampton, a former Southeast Valley standout, struck out five batters over six innings and held DMACC to its lowest run total in 10 games. The Bears had scored in double figures in each of their last 10 outings, including 52 runs in a sweep of Marshalltown earlier this week.

“We just couldn’t get that timely hit when we needed it,” Iowa Central head coach Bo Tjebben said. “We battled and really played well against a very, very good team.

“This is a confident group that has been playing solid softball as of late. We’ve just got to keep pushing forward.”

In the nightcap, ex-Fort Dodge Senior Hightall-stater Loghen Schnetzer hit a home run and was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two walks. Gilroy had three hits and scored a run, while Thompson drove in a run and scored.

Dighton hit her third home run of the day to lead DMACC, who picked up 13 strikeouts from pitchers Abby Flanagan and Lexi Lander.

“DMACC is a hard team to pitch around,” Tjebben said. “I thought our pitchers did a tremendous job of limiting them and our defense played incredible.”

Iowa Central will honors its sophomores between games on Saturday. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Starting at $4.94/week.
