Fishing restrictions to be lifted at Badger Lake

Some fishing restrictions will be lifted at Badger Lake in John F. Kennedy Memorial Park beginning Saturday to reduce the population of undesirable fish.

The daily bag limits and length restrictions on fish that are caught will be temporarily lifted, according to Webster County Conservation and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Those with a valid fishing license will be able to take fish by any means except by the use of dynamite, poison, electroshocking devices or any stupefying substances, the agencies reported.

These changes will remain in place until further notice.

The lake’s fish population is now dominated by common carp and black crappie.

In an effort to improve the lake, its water level will be reduced this summer. Also this summer, chemicals will be used to kill off the remaining fish. When the project is done, the lake will be stocked with desirable fish.
