Daycare provider arrested for child’s death

EMMETSBURG — A daycare provider was arrested Friday in connection with the January death of a 23-month-old boy.

Hannah J. Priest, 28, of Emmetsburg, was arrested by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and charged with child endangerment resulting in death. She remains in jail on a $50,000 cash only bond.

She is charged in connection with the death of Sebastian Jesperson, a child who was in her care.

On Jan. 19, paramedics were called to 1605 Eighth St. in Emmetsburg at about 1:30 p.m. after Priest found Jesperson unresponsive on his cot. The boy was initially treated at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg before being transferred to Blank Childrens Hospital in Des Moines. He died in that hospital on Jan. 24.

An autopsy conducted by the state medical examiner determined that he died of brain trauma consistent with inflicted trauma.

According to a criminal complaint filed against her, Priest told investigators that Jesperson acted normally on Jan. 19. She said he did not suffer any accidental injuries that day and that no other child hit him, according to the complaint.

But in a third interview, Priest told investigators that she was frustrated with Jesperson on Jan. 19 because he had not yet gone to the bathroom that day, the criminal complaint states. According to that complaint, she stated that she set the boy onto his cot by his shoulders and may not have known her own strength while doing so.
