Iowa Central athletes punch national tickets

COUNCIL BLUFFS — The Iowa Central track and field teams were in action here at the Region XI Championships.

The Triton women placed second overall with the men finishing third. Iowa Western swept the team titles.

Earning first-place finishes for the Iowa Central women were Dayvione Briggs (400 hurdles), Abigail Frey (pole vault), Tina Samson (long jump), Rowland Kirton-Browne (javeline), Sara Diew (discus), Landry McCoid (Heptathlon) and the 4×400 relay of Frey, Samson, Nicole Schaefer and Briggs.

McCoid secured a spot at nationals in the Hepthatlon along with the 4×100 relay.

Canyon Jones (pole vault) and the 4×100 relay of Youssef Hamed, Waukeem Walters, Miles Reed and Bongumusa Nkosi won events for the men.

Antonie Tshimanga in the 800 and both Hamza Mohamed and Jadon Boots in the 1,500 earned bids to nationals.

“While we may not have finished where we wanted to as teams, we have nothing to be disappointed about with our individual performances,” Iowa Central head coach Anne Cleary said. “We train all year with a goal to have our best performance during the championship season and that’s just what many of our team members did this weekend.

“We also had many athletes sacrifice their individual performance to do different or multiple events this weekend to score team points.”

The NJCAA Championships take place May 16-18 in Monroe, La.
