Taking center stage with Keyonna Douglas
Just dance; Douglas enjoys life on the dance floor

Keyonna Douglas got plenty of practice dancing when she was younger and that helped her prepare for it once she hit the hallways at Fort Dodge Senior High School.
While she was growing up, Douglas would turn on her Wii video game console and practice “Just Dance”, something she enjoys doing now.
“I’ve always had a strong passion for dance ever since I was a little girl,” Douglas said. “I would constantly play “Just Dance: on the Wii console.
“However, I never participated in a dance team until my freshman year of high school.”
Dance has been a huge part of Douglas’ life and it continues to be as it has built relationships.
“Being in dance is a moral that I have developed on a daily basis whereas it allows me to express myself in a variety of aspects,” Douglas said. “Dance has also created many lifelong friendships.”
Douglas is also involved in both Fort Dodge dance teams, track, Social Justice Council, National Honor Society, Dodger Senate, Diversity Action Troupe, International Culture Club, choir and TRIO.
“It is important to be involved so you can inspire others to become involved also, especially those younger than you,” Douglas said. “When you are involved in multiple different activities you create a variety of friendships that amount to your different interests.”
While involved in all of her activities, Keyonna has had a partner and best friend right by her side in her twin sister Keymora.
“Even though Keymora and I have completely opposite personality traits,” Douglas said. “I enjoy her presence on the dance team with me.
“It is delightful to have my twin sister by my side throughout all of our practices and performances, whereas she brings me comfort and happiness.”
Dancing is an activity that takes time and practice, and Douglas enjoys the work that goes into it.
“It can become frustrating at times to prepare for a routine, but the outcome is always worth the trials and tribulations,” Douglas said. “In a musical you are given a prompt for what characteristic traits you should contain for your assigned character.
“To prepare for a dance performance you must decide what attitude you want the audience to perceive.”
To give equal time and effort to each activity can be tough, but for Douglas it is about the product.
“It is extremely difficult to be involved in many different things, but the memories are worth it,” Douglas said. “The trick is to apply an equal amount of time to each activity while also bringing your best to any meeting, practice or performance.”
Douglas’ most memorable part of dance is the all-day Sunday practices for state performances.
Through her high school career Douglas has had a number of influences that have helped her.
“My biggest influence has been my teachers Mr. Constable and Ms. Winter,” Douglas said. “They have both assisted me throughout my high school career and shall forever hold a special place in my heart.
“My other influences are my family, friends, teammates and coworkers (at nursing home).”
After high school Douglas plans on majoring in accounting. She has a strong desire to pass her CPA exam, but is undecided about what college.
