Driver who crashed into FD home failed to appear at arraignment

The man who drove into a Fort Dodge home while fleeing the police in the early morning hours of May 21 has a warrant out for his arrest after failing to appear at his arraignment scheduled on Monday.

David Patrick Grunwald, 31, of Fort Dodge, is charged with operating while intoxicated — third or subsequent offense, a Class D felony; eluding while operating intoxicated, a Class D felony; driving while barred – habitual offender, an aggravated misdemeanor; and leaving the scene of an accident — causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor.

According to criminal complaints, Grunwald was driving northbound on South 15th Street when he rear-ended another vehicle at First Avenue South around 2 a.m. on May 21. Grunwald then allegedly drove off. The driver of the vehicle Grunwald hit followed until law enforcement intervened. Grunwald continued to flee the area, driving over 70 miles per hour in a 25 miles per hour zone.

The pursuit came to a violent end when Grunwald’s 2015 Toyota Camry lost control and slammed into the house at 1928 Sixth Ave. N. No one in the house was injured. Grunwald and a passenger in the vehicle were transported to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center for injuries sustained in the crash.

According to the criminal complaint, Grunwald’s blood alcohol content was 0.281 percent..

Grunwald was scheduled for an arraignment on Monday morning and failed to appear. A warrant has been issued for his arrest with a $13,000 cash bond.
